RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street As history teaches us Ian all prohibition is bonkers and ultimately unworkable with human nature.
You would have thought that our good and great would have learned from history rather than changing it for politically correct ends but no, they continue along the same old road to the same old dead ends.

RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street Well this is one of the first obvious problems with this pathetic ban - having created trouble where for the most part none previously existed. Why? because us nasty smokers have NOT caved in to the anti smoking brigade and decided to quit as was the intention of the ban - bugger all to do with SHS which is a crock of SHT. So now more 'crackdowns' will be needed. How many more before poeple have had enough of this dictatorial CRP. The landlocked pubs in my area are virtually deserted - and no, the weather is not a major factor. This post replies to this thread |

RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street I have just had one of the most unenjoyable weekends running my comunity pub that i have had in 10 years. I have self appointed smoking police walking around my bar causing tension and anoyance to all customers because they think they are empowered in law to enforce the smoking ban in my bar. These are long standing customers who have previously drunk in my bar for years and would not normally say boo to anyone. A large notice has now been placed on my wall informing the next customer that tries to do this in MY BAR will be barred smoking or non smoking customer. We are witnessing the begining of the end of an era. This post replies to Ken Nason > RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street |

RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street Why are licensees being forced to do the jobs of the local police? So many supported the smoking ban but now the unthought consequences are really starting to show. It appears that some local councils are going out of their way to make life hard for their local publicans. If people have been forced out of the pub where else do they go (especially if you are a pub on a highstreet) I also read an artical recently that local councils could also fine publicans who refuse to clear up cigarette ends. What has this county become? Are you proud to be British? are you proud to be a publican? This post replies to this thread |

RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street Jane you are right lots of licensees did support the ban, many for personal preference reasons. The common theme with those who supported it was that could not see the 'wood' for the 'smoke'. The LA's ASH etal made it very clear even before the ink was dry that they would be going after the public smokers next. It was clear to be seen and yet the Pubco's and Trade bodies rolled over and are now bitching, just a tad to late. What's the betting over the LA Act review that the very same trade 'leaders' will now try and fight to save, what few of us wanted in the first place. RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street With so many people argreeing to the ban it is the same old story, just told in a differant way. Non Smokers - totally unaccepatble that smoking shoyld be allowed in public places. But where are all those non smokers. We live in a town of 4000 residents, less than half of whom use the pubs in our community and with around a quater supporting the ban. I can count on one hand the number of non smokers who have visited us sine 1st July! Same old story with the old English pub. As soon as a pub is going to be lost due to developers, lack of trade whatever the reason a community will go up in arms to keep it. Where are all drinkers when the pub was going out of business? I overheard in our premises the other day a non smoker commenting to a friend how horrible it looked with a group of 6 or so sat outside on our benches smoking! What is the alternative? Every smoker gives up smoking - How much would our taxes increase by, what would happen to the NHS? WHERE ARE ALL THE NON SMOKING PUB SUPPORTING CUSTOMERS? RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street ......they were largely a disingenuous and fictitous construction in the mind of the anti-smokers to give credance to their arguments! This post replies to jane acott > RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street |

RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street Jane exactly where we have all said since this whole sorry mess started. Sitting at home where they have always been and remain.
The only difference being of course that now the one reason they gave for not visiting the pub, smokey atmosphere, they don't have an excuse now. Anti smokers never were pub goers anyway, not because of the smokers but because their interpretation of going to the pub is on high days and holidays. As we said, and were of course told we didn't know what we were talking about, there won't be an influx of greatful non smokers to replace the smokers driven from their social centres.
And so it has come to pass.

RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street Well said Ken, aint that the truth! At least the non smokers are doing something contructive (possibly plotting their new burgen of laws; ban cars from the roads because of their fumes, ban computer games because it makes children violent, ban mobile phones because texting makes us unsociable - the list is endless) You see they all really want to visit the local pub, they just have not had the time!!! RE: Pubs warned over smokers drinking in street We have got the largest outside area of any pub in town so we don't have any problem with smokers standing on the street. rather surprisingly we have no problem with fag ends around the entrances with people using the fag bins I nailed on the wall ; how long they will be allowed to stay there remains to be seen as we are in a conservation area.
Being the largest pub in town we are used for many team playoffs and presentation nights so our trade is just about average on the previous 13 weeks, having said that it should have been boosted for the reasons above. I expect it will fail noticeably when we enter into the gap between seasons of our many darts and pool teams.
Talking to my drayman who is also a regular he said that everywhere is down with all the landlords blaming the smoking ban rather than the weather. This post replies to this thread |
