I wish you'd stop with this paranoia - when has anyone said the Sunday Mirror was lying? Sensationalist yes but lying no. If 1 publican out of 70 interviewed reported a decline of 40% and the headline went "Pubs down by 40% since the ban" - that isnt lying but its certainly sensationalist, like the majority of stories in Red Tops. Nothing to do with any other factor we all face with, I take it? Nothing to do with the weather, competition, price increases and every other challenge, I take it? How about the fact that we have been up against the World Cup 2006 sales last June/July ? How on earth can you predict anything with 4 weeks sales data, anyway? I for one, would steer well clear of a bar if the landlord looked backwards all the time.

As for your comments re the elderly, the ones we refer too as you well know are those of a generation that were the biggest smokers. I have extensive knowledge of sheltered housing and I can assure you at least 3/4's of those in these homes actually smoke. I use to police 5 sheltered complexes that I visited frequently and currently have 4 or 5 groups from similar establishments who hold their lunches here, 75% of the 70 to 90 yearsolds that come here smoke. Are you saying that a business should accept this ludicrous law when its customers don't want it? Just what is your point? No i didn't say that but it is interesting you make my point look that is what I mean. The host said he could not afford huge costs on outside furniture, I merely stated there was a low cost alternative, the cost of 4 packets of fags, which is a start if there is little money and the trade is failing. We accept ludicrous laws all the time duty stamp, hunting ban, working time and smoking is no different becuase it is the law now. They interviewed 70 pubs and 1 pub was down 40% - the headline says pubs down 40% since the ban. lying no, sensationalist yes - i ask again, can you not see that?
