RE: Reading pubs blame ban for downturn

I think it is not a coincidence that Managers are playing down the effect. This is the response we have come to expect from the multiple operators who are protecting shareholder value. However the plight of 'real' pubs is being repeated countrywide but still HMG, ASH and the trade organisations remain resilient that there isn't a problem. My post elsewhere on the stress, and economic effects on employees as reported by Croner just puts things in perspective. The bans have harmed all manner of businesses for a perceived risk that frankly doesn't exist except in the minds of the health fanatics.

It is a worry that HMG will not give a balanced view, why not be big enough to admit that the ban is causing major problems in certain sectors !

RE: Reading pubs blame ban for downturn

I was in Reading a couple of weeks ago when the England v Russia game was on.

A pub next to the train station had installed a large TV outside, so that smokers could watch the game(the inside was virtually  empty).

What will happen when its too cold outside? Given the choice of staying home or going round a mate's place where you are to smoke, with the added incentive of cheaper beer, who is going to go to the pub to watch the game?

And they say things are bad now!

RE: Reading pubs blame ban for downturn

You are right Andy, in Ireland home consumption has increased by 17% since their smoking ban, and reports from Scotland indicate similar trends as we in England and Wales are also facing. You ask why Government won't be honest Alastair. The Health Service is in a turmoil, the last thing they need is for the funds from Big P to dry up. If they admit that smoking cessation doesn't work, that people are smoking more and parts of the economy are suffering then they admit yet another failure as  Government. They have too many failures already.

Getting more moans now the nights are turning chilly

Pressure on the profit margins increase from Monday with the increase in the minimum wage and holidays

With the downturn staffing levels may have to be reviewed

Many of us are in the same boat Kevin. What do you do. We are apparently going into a very cold spell which will increase utilities at a time none of us can afford the extra costs. Do we lay off staff, reduce opening hours. There is no easy solution.

RE: Reading pubs blame ban for downturn

Don't worry chaps, I'm sure that some of the pro-banners will have some supportive words and brilliant ideas to help everyone out of this situation. The JDW manager's comment begs a question: why, if recovery would be just a matter of time, did JDW dump their experiment? The lack of a level playing field perhaps?.....just like the one that exists now between the off trade (home consumption) and the on trade......How ironic that the rise in home 'unregulated' drinking, that will give ammunition to the anti-drink campaigners, is a result of the desires of the anti-smoking campaigners!
