RE: Scottish smoking ban hits turnover Why is it I dont think HMG will allow this to be front page news, it will merely be brushed under the carpet like any other bad ban news. This post replies to this thread |

RE: Scottish smoking ban hits turnover You are quite right Alistair, but do you remember ASH saying we are not anti smokers, we do not want to ban smoking; Well it seems the truth always comes out when somone makes a retirement or resignation speech. This time it is Maureen Moore Head of Scottish ASH. Scotland should strive to be an entirely smoke-free country, a leading campaigner said yesterday. In her last major speech before her retirement at the end of the year, Maureen Moore OBE, chief executive of Ash Scotland, called for more ambition and vision from the Scottish Government. She said: "Other countries have raised their sights and are aspiring to become smoke-free and protect and support their citizens from this deadly drug. http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/health/display.var.1717526.0.0.php This post replies to this thread |

RE: Scottish smoking ban hits turnover I t's interesting what you find by reading comments on other sites. This from the comments section on the Herald link in my last post. Dear Sir / Madam,
I was wondering what links you have to other ASH organisations worldwide. I wish to frame my question specifically in relation to ASH USA and ASH New Zealand.
Do you stand by the following assertion from the American ASH website: "Drifting tobacco smoke already kills more people than motor vehicle accidents, all crimes, AIDS, illegal drugs, etc. In other words, you are statistically more likely to be killed by your neighbor's tobacco smoke than by his car, his gun, or his AIDS virus." ( http://www.ash.org/s moking-in-condos-and -apartments.html ).
Moreover, are there any plans for any of the UK ASH organisations to emulate your antipodean counterparts and call for outright prohibition of tobacco products? http://www.ash.org.n z/index.php?pa_id=4& news_id=159&expand_s ection=1
Yours faithfully,
Tim Clarke.
The reply:
Dear Tim
ASH in the UK is completely independent from the other organisations that share the ASH name. We do, however, share broadly the same goals, ie the substantial reduction in the harm caused by tobacco.
I have not seen the evidence to support the American ASH claim about secondhand smoke.
We are not calling for an outright ban on the sale of tobacco products as this would be an unrealistic policy at present in the UK. The situation may change in the future but we are a long way from being in that position.
Regards
Amanda Sandford Research Manager ASH 102 Clifton Street LONDON EC2A 4HW t 020 7739 5902 f 020 7613 0531
What a surprise. ASH lying yet again. As Mureen Moore has already called for ASH UK to emulate New Zealand, in her farewell speech after Ms Sandfords response. Don't you just love joined up thinking. This post replies to Charles Yaxley > RE: Scottish smoking ban hits turnover |

RE: Scottish smoking ban hits turnover I suppose that if we assume that you are on good terms with your neighbour his gun becomes no threat; that his car is only a danger to you when he is parking, minimal threat; and that you are not having unprotected sex with him because you know he has AIDS, anything else could be more threatening, perhaps even including a meteor strike, an al-Qaeda bomb, or his pet crocodile escaping....... So, we can conclude that American ASH are making a perfectly reasonable suggestion even before we examine the nebulous science for the dangers of passive smoking. RE: Scottish smoking ban hits turnover Knew it all along. But why do they have to lie if they have to ban something- perhaps their jobs go out of the window. This post replies to Robert Feal-Martinez > RE: Scottish smoking ban hits turnover |
