RE: Hey Jo club still flouting ban

Regardless of the fact of freehold over leasehold. They will close our premises. I was until recently stewardess of a private club, owned out right by it's members, the smoking ban had to be introduced ,and due to the fact of not having any outside area to provide our customers somewhere to smoke. They stayed at home, where at the moment they still have the choice to smoke. The result week on week numbers both of staff and customers diminished until it was no longer viable to operate, result the members ,had no option but to put THIER club on the market, a tradition over 100 years has been lost,my staff lost their livelihood as did I along with my home.We are all now just another statistic, swelling the numbers of unemployed And homeless in our already over stretched area and sadly we will NOT be the last. These are facts about real people not percieved possibilites, or political point scoring's.

Antonia you are sadly not alone, which area are you actually in. There are many small self help groups springing up that could at least offer you moral if not financial support.

May I also add I am a woman with a family now in thier 30's,who was until last year was also the carer for a parent in their 80's and due to many strokes confined to a wheelchair.some of that time as a single parent. I have been in this trade for over 30 years. It can be done and frequently is by many women in this position,so much for not employing women of child bearing age.A ridiculously antiquated and chauvanistic idea that should be relegated to it's rightful place history and the dustbin.

They are very clear in their views particularly Tony who is retiring due to ill health. As far as Hamish, he is returning to a hospitality sector that remains vibrant with choice for all, he has many years of valuable experience running venues overseas including the Rovers Return in Kissimee, Florda as well as others in the Canary Islands and as a result sees just how HMG are strangling the very industry that they rely so heavily upon.  As Bob says, their decisions have more to do with the vision of the future here in the U.K. than their experiences of the smoking ban which they all intend seeing through to a final conclusion.

True Antonia, this problem affects all sectors of the trade, no matter whether you are freehold, leasehold, tenancy or management.  It also affects staff and customers so the spectrum is broad.  At this point in time it is not affecting banks/building societies, Pub Cos etc enough for them to get involved, however as time goes on and mortgages are not being paid, rents are not being paid, managers are not reaching their targets etc these "big boys" are going to have to get involved in one way or another.  The only way forward is through the weight of public opinion.

"I just don't think they clean behind the fridge enough"  GET A LIFE.  I have met women who are prepared to stand and fight for what they believe is right, some of these women have bigger ba**s than a lot of men.  If he wants to "deal with womens issues" then I suggest he starts looking in his own backyard because his attitude is one of the biggest issues going.

Wardy I think you are allowing yourself to be dragged into on of Jon's little games. He has nothing constructive to offer so he repeats ad naseum the same old tripe. What 'Bloom' says is nof no relevence to any of the issues being discussed by the sensible posters. I think you have been here long enough to knwo that Jon's agenda is to destroy construction dialogue aimed at helping other licensees, when he's asked to several times by Nicola we have seen she now becomes one of the 'group' out to get Managers.

I understand what is going on and I have no intention of being dragged into anything messrs Singleton & Bloom have to say (I have bigger fish to fry).  However some light banter along the way to alleviate the stress works wonders!

Alan, it is interesting to note that at least one other organisation agrees with my views on Air Quality..namely the United Nations. Last week they issued a statement claiming that 2 million deaths occured each year as a result of poor Indoor and Outdoor Air Quality and that Governments were aware of real technological solutions but continue to ignore their existance.

Jon...it has been noted that you have failed to answer my question, what is your solution for retaining customers to a landlocked venue especially if the venue is wet led?

Wardy, I would like to think you are right that the "Big Boys" at the bank etc will come to their senses;  however like the pubcos and utility industry have proven so ably in the past, they will just hike their prices to cover their increased overhead without a care in the world to us on the front line of any business.
