RE: OFT: Legislation needed for minimum price talks Leglislation compelling minimum pricing in the trade (on and off) could be approached from a different angle by removing the brewers right to discount price for bulk buyers i.e. this is the minimum price you can sell 500ml/or 36gallon of beer at regardless of what container it ends up in. if you can get more fair enough, purchasers would then be obliged not to sell below this purchase price plus vat. It's only an idea as obvious flaws include international brewers would by economies of scale have a larger profit margin that home based brewers and the EU would have a lot to say

RE: OFT: Legislation needed for minimum price talks Duty, Duty, Duty!!! All they have to do is charge higher duty on sales for the off-trade! They could do that now, if they were interested. It doesn't need any change in law. THey could just keep raising off-trade rates until the supermarkets stop giving it away. It could also be revenue neutral and be used to reduce duty rates in the on trade if the Government were really interested in having people drinking in safe, secure, responsible environments!
