Good to see the reality coming into print.

Pity the reality wasn't accepted when licensees foretold this BEFORE the ban

Is this 15% of the operators profit, or 15% of the pre-rent profit ? And if the latter, will we see the pubcos lowering rents by their 15% ?

Doubt it, but it's a nice dream.

Richard from the pubcos point of view it is a drop of your share of the profit and not reflected in gross operating profit and is therefore in practice nearer 30% to you the tenant.

By the way if they looked upon it in a fair way it would reflect in a 7.5% rent reduction (50/50 split pre rent profit)

Thought it might work like that.

Thanks.

MA, will you be publishing your findings to a wider front?  These statistics come as no shock to those of us who read your paper, contribute within these forums and/or licensees but this is damning evidence of the effects of a ban that was said by some (Gordon & his merry men) would not be the case.  After all if his was a local post office the country would be up in arms and yet a far greAter expanse of employees are facing job losses not to mention the employers who face the prospect of losing their jobs, home amd businesses (and thats after their dwindlin sales and low profit margins)

Anyone put in for a rates reduction?  The smoking ban has to be a Material Change of Circumstances but what are the trade bodies doing about leading the charge as a group?!

Alister , good idea re rate rebaite but what we realy need is to get this anti pub government out of office and target a party that will help us , then encourage our bar customers to vote for said party.

As for trade bodies pulling together , more cahnce of seeing a flying pig go past your window , sad but true, this industry is made up of individuals , private operators who have their heads down making a living dispite this governmant.

This news must come as a real shock to Marstons. Late last year I was told by my Regional Estates Manager, that the smoking ban would not affect my trade. ( Whilst discusing my rent review ). My rent was then increased by 20%. Hope you read this Kate.
