I have now started the process of the petition and have completed my e-mail to my MP. I find it very concerning that 41% of licencees at the time of my vote feel that by taking action it still won't change the idiot at the top, trying to ruin our businesses, to change his mind on the tax hikes. How the hell are we supposed to fight this with such deafeted attitudes as that, we may as well just sit back and let him take the p*ss out of us and be done with it. COM'ON LETS STICK TOGETHER AND FIGHT THIS MAN!!!!!!!! Chris This post replies to this thread |

The Poster is up and the petition ready for opening time ! We will also be hitting the town center on Friday and Saturday to get the support from as many people as possible. I have tried e-mailing my MP on numerous occasions but he always deletes without reading.... Thats MR QUENTIN (Turn Coat) (I was a conservative but now I'm labour) Davies. Oops thats me ranting again. Lets do this and show Brown & Co that we will not go away until they listen to us and make proposals to support, not kill this great British institution. Personally I don't think the licenced trade should be in any way concerned about this because there is ZERO chance that this bunch of incompetent buffoons will be re-elected. This post replies to Darren Cheesman > RE: Fight the Hikes! |

Chris, right conclusion (hopefully) but dodgey rationale. Surely it will be the arrogance of the present government who have reduced their ignoring of public opinion to an art form - so needs to be fought by persistant lobbying of MPs, trade bodies etc, and at every level particularly remembering the local elections next month. Ok we're all set. The posters are up, the petition is underway, we have to stick together on this. It is easy to feel isolated in this business and feel you are the only one worried about the threat to pubs. Let's give a strong message that we aim to fight tooth and nail to save our pubs. Peter, I couldn't agree more with the lobbying principle, but its proven to have little effect in the past. Pub licencees are in the demographic minority and therefore not worth a lot of votes. Rightly or wrongly there are more important vote-catching issues, NHS, immigration etc etc ..... As regards my 'dodgy ratonale', the more I think on it the more I don't think so. I've been to Magistrates on a couple of occasions to make declaratons under oath regarding cars I've sold and the parking/speeding fines they picked up thereafter. The cost of such declarations are minimal, from memory it cost me £25 a couple of years ago. I'm not a licensee but if I declare under OATH to a court that I am adhering to a particular code of conduct then someone has to PROVE me a liar. I don't think that multi-coloured spreadsheets produced by some nefarious and totally unaccountable system can do that. This post replies to Peter Eveleigh > RE: Fight the Hikes! |

"IF THE INDUSTRY GETS IT ACT TOGETHER" I seem to remember being told a very similar story about the smoking ban, if we all created a cleaner air environment with air purifiers and better ventilation and "GOT OUR ACT TOGETHER" the smoking ban would not be a blanket coverage. I for one spent thousands of pounds on new kit that is now redundent because no-one smokes inside anymore! I've already got the poster up and will do the petition but I'm not holding my breath, I can still walk up to my local Spar and buy a 500ml can of Stella for 99p. I think it's other people that need to sort their policies out and realise where the real binge drinking stems from! This post replies to this thread |

Don't despair. Although the past uncoordinated mediocre efforts by the British people at fighting the smoking ban have not had a successful outcome, that does not mean we should despair at our democratic system and the power of the people if moved sufficiently (remember 2nd May 1997 - I seem to recall that the British people en mass moved to remove the former Conservative government quite successfully). I am a licensee of a popular "ommunity" style pub in Coventry. I used to be a Legal Executive and have run my own businesses previously. I am certainly going to participate in this national effort to bring to the notice of the British people that if they don't back their "local" in this campaign, the "local" will inevitably cease to exist. The larger Managed houses will be all that remain, but who really wants the sterility of such places which are often devoid of atmosphere and community spirit? Will the working man ever want to just stop at Tescos to pick up his 6 pack of lager and return straight home to the wife without having stopped off for his couple of pints and socialising with his friends? Another core British tradition is disappearing. Fast. It is not enough to be complacent and watch it happen. As licensees/pub owners we are often well known in the local community and we should use this to our advantage. The government is not the only problem. I have had two price hikes due to the brewery price increase and then the Chancellor's nail in the coffin. Personally, I am putting together another petition to present to my Retail Partner - Enterprise Inns. I would suggest more of you adopt a two pronged attack on this basis. The pub companies are going to have to assist all of us more in this current non-smoking climate and realise that perhaps their short term profits need to take a dip in terms of offering licensees realistic discounted beer prices in order to produce long te This post replies to this thread |
