RE: Fight the Hikes & Ban the Chancellor!

We've banned the Chancellor (we got two sizable page two items in different papers - it all helps), now we're on the case to raise the petition... I think we have to band together and sound the large loud voice of our customer base to make sure that it is understood how far off the mark the budget was.  The reasons the budget is terrible for our industry have been detailed elsewhere so I won't go into them again but what does need to be sorted out is our lobbying ability [or lack of it].  It would seem that the best place to start would be from our customer base, building on from the successful momentum a petition gains [assuming we all pitch in and support it] and hopefully use that to push some organised lobbying from a unified organisation. We have far too many interested parties, we really need them all to get around the table together and form a lobbying group with one responsible voice shouting for all of us. Hi Rebecca,

I'm from Coventry and run a pub in Cubbington, L'spa and a pub in Warwick, could you give me more information about your petition to your retail partner, I may follow your lead. Out of interest what pub do you run. Thanks Chris

RE: Fight the Hikes!

Hi Chris, and to you all.

I run the Craven Arms Public House in Woodway Lane, Walsgrave, Coventry.  Please feel free to drop in for a pint!  I have been working mainly on the petition to my MP at this stage - I have also considered pub management recently as a means of paying myself a wage which would be really nice right now!

I agree with the other posts as well that we need to work on a co-ordinated basis within our local areas, perhaps with the assistance of the local licensed victuallers associations...does anyone have any news on what this group is doing to fight for the survival of the trade?

If anyone wants to contact me, my email address is samwellg@hotmail.co.uk .

A friend of mine who works as deputy political editor on the Sunday Telegraph has also passed me the contact details of a member of the government who has recently spoken out against the Chancellor's increases in parliament.  I plan to get my petition to him personally.  If you want details, let me know.  Perhaps we could organise a formal lobbying group-sorry I've been away for a while but I had a couple of days off this week (first time since July 2007!)  You all now how it is!

All the best,

Rebecca

RE: Fight the Hikes & Ban the Chancellor!

Steve, what about the FLA?  What are they doing if anything?  I agree that lobbying takes a co-ordinated, sustained effort.  I also agree with your work to raise the profile of our cause through local publicity and pr.  Perhaps if we all agree to get out petitions to a certain point - through our own customers, local residents and then plan a course of action to be taken after that?

My email address is samwellg@hotmail.co.uk

Best regards,

Rebecca  Elliott

RE: Fight the Hikes!

Congrats to everyone getting campaign rolling and the work (petitions etc) that make it easy to join. It's so important to campaign and stop these politicians in their ivory towers automatically bullying businesses and knocking back their 'automated jerk' habit of raising taxes on alcahol (and cigarettes and petrol, for that matter) as if tax-grabbing has some vacuous moral right behind it.

If we took a more active role in parliament (ie. got off our arses) the ivory towers would crumble and a better more democratic system would emerge to everyones benefit. The more of us that pile into parliament the less space in the corridors of power for creeps with minority vested interests that have infested and dictated the political agenda for far too long.

As seen with the smoking ban that's brought nothing but misery, devisiveness and damaging economically to the trade and its customers. It'd be nice for politics to work without lifting a finger. The lesson is it doesn't. Get involved.
