Herald Inns & Bars, the company headed by Julian Sargeson, has entered a pre-pack administration.

A new company, Cougar Leisure, headed by Sargeson, has emerged to operate 21 of Herald’s 37 sites.

The administration comes after Herald closed 11 loss-making venues with onerous leases in the past few weeks.

A total of 16 sites remain with administrator Ernst & Young. A pre-pack administration is a route taken by several companies this year as a way of ditching their “toxic leases” – those very difficult to sell-on because of their high rental obligations.

The closed sites suffered from the smoking ban, shifts in the circuit and excessive rents. Sargeson, who became chief executive at Herald last year, told the Morning Advertiser: “We’ve had very good support from HBOS, who have maintained funds in the Cougar Leisure business.”

It is understood that Cougar Leisure will continue to operate from Herald’s former offices in Chorley. There have been a handful of redundancies at the C

Wouldn't it be great if the pub you were running was making a loss & you could just ditch it without having to pay the debts & start again. I must be doing something wrong here. I was always brought up to believe that, if you owed money, you somehow paid it back. Looks like the fat cats are getting fatter. Don't worry about the poor sods that are running your pubs guys, there's always the dole!!!!

Seriously though Reg. I've seen this a lot in business. Companies going bankrupt and opening the next day with the same directors under a different name. I lost a lot of money that way back in the 90s. I wasn't on the list of preferred creditors, (Banks essentially). Immoral, yes, illegal, not if they do it right. Lost £6000 in one hit with one company. Never saw a penny. :( Dave E.

And you wonder why HBOS couldn't give its shares away in a rights issue. The lunacy of banks never ceases to amaze me. Still, when the current generation of wise old owls are thrown on to the streets of London town at the ripe old age of 30, we will have the next generation of 23yr-old whiz kids who know all about lending money - and the roundabout can start all over again.

It's obvious, you get the chance to 'pack' before they close you down.
