The first year of the smoking ban is now behind us. Comparative pub sales from 2007 should therefore be easier to beat, but has the suicidal aggression of the off-trade, together with the slowing economy, picked up where the ban left off?
And if it has, then what implications does this have for the UK’s circa 30,000 tenants and lessees and for the companies that ultimately own the assets that they operate?
Here we offer (right) what we believe to be a typical tenant or lessee’s profit and loss for both the current year and year one. There can be no positive spin attached to a 90% profit decline and tenants have bills to pay. While VAT payments and rent bills do not have to fall on the traditional quarter days (end-March etc), they often do, and as straws that break the camel’s back go, these are pretty big straws. End-September and end-December might be tricky for tenants’ cash-flow and, although both may well be manageable, end-March 2009 might be a tougher proposition.

Don't know who he is - apparently he wants to talk about hiring the pub for a leaving party or something. I'm never around to take the calls though - always posting on some blog or forum or other that has nothing to do with my business. Brumby: The cost of tenant support Three pubco BDM’s were being chased by the main man Mr Giles because they hadn’t reached their zillion pound monthly profits. After 10 minutes of running, they spotted a barn and ran inside. Once inside, they each hid in an old sack against the barn wall. Giles went into the barn but did not see where they went, he was about to turn back when he saw three suspicious looking sacks. He walked forward and prodded the first sack. The Midlands BDM inside said... ''Meow'.' "Just cats," he thought. He then prodded the second sack. The Devon BDM, hearing how the Midlands BDM got off said... ''Woof'.' "Just dogs," he thought. As he walked towards the last sack, the South London BDM worked out what he was going to say. As soon as Giles prodded his sack, he said... ''Potatoes!''
