News Article Comments : MP calls for smoke ban exemptions

Alastair Elliott

Health Secretary Alan Johnson has defended the smoking ban after an MP lodged a petition calling for partial exemptions for pubs.

MP Daniel Kawczynski wants smoking allowed in up to 20% of pubs’ interiors — because “the current ban on smoking in public places leaves smokers exposed to the elements of the British winter”.

The Tory MP for Shrewsbury & Atcham said it’s “unfair to treat bars and pubs the same as other public places when it comes to smoking, as smoking tobacco is something people traditionally do in bars and pubs”.

Johnson replied that a blanket ban “created a level playing field within the hospitality sector”.

This “was seen to be the fairest solution, whilst also protecting workers and the wider public from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke”.

Johnson added: “Parliament also gave consideration to exposure to the elements of a British winter for those who go outside and smoke.

“It is generally recognised that winters in this country are much less harsh than in

RE: MP calls for smoke ban exemptions

Health Sec. Alan Johnson said, "... winters in this country are much less harsh than in other countries such as Canada and Norway, where comprehensive smoke-free laws had been successfully enacted before the law in England.”

The Secretary does not deserve his office. This is the most absurdly weak justification I have yet to hear for the UK ban. It's similar to saying "We should not be criticized for having prison chain gangs building roads in the winter. Stalin did the same with great success in the harsh winters of the Gulag."

RE: MP calls for smoke ban exemptions

I was looking for a weekend break the other day on the net and noticed that some hotels were offering 'smoking rooms'. Looked it up and came up with this!

Does anyone know how they get away with this?

RE: MP calls for smoke ban exemptions

Scottish Legislation allows hotels to designate smoking rooms. There conditions re ventilation etc. Is this same with the English legislation. I would have thought so.

RE: MP calls for smoke ban exemptions

Johnson claims to put a level playing field for the hospitality business due to the banning of smoking in public places. the wet led pubs are having a harder time than most to survive with less people using these places, food led has had a better chance. All licenced premises that have increased costs due to extra shelters, heating and lighting is another way the government and Mr Johnson can impose on the peasants of the land.

We have a village Inn and have noticed that the groups of customers (for eating) who used to come regularly (about once every three to four weeks) have only been twice since the ban. the customers who do smoke are older and cannot sit outside to have a puff on their pipes whist the diabled member of the group is brought into the Inn and at the end of the meal when they like to have another puff on the pipe.

I have found that we have less diners as well as drinkers since the ban, that includes smokers and non-smokers.

On the subject of protecting staff from smoke inhalation. The main problem is to have them behind the bar instead of in the smoking shelter outside. I have always understood that if the working conditions do not suite the employee then don't do the job.

Other EU countries have a sensible attitude e.g Portugal, when I was there earlier this year they have certain sizes of establishments that can have customers inside to smoke in a certain area, saves a lot of fuel and reduces these so-called carbon footprints.
