Two men in Nottingham have been hit with fines and costs of over £550 for dropping cigarette butts.
The fines serve as a warning to pubs to provide outside ashtrays for their customers if smoking is occurring on the street.
Magistrates ordered Fatmer Sula of Norbett Road, Arnold, and Thomas Lunt of Leybourne Drive, Bestwood, to pay the charges after failing to cough up for the original fixed penalty notice of £75 for littering.
Sula was ordered to pay a fine of £375, costs of £177.33 and a £15 victim surcharge.
Lunt was ordered to pay a fine of £375, costs of £168.66 and a £15 victim surcharge.
"This sends out the message that Nottingham City Council operates a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to littering, particularly cigarette litter as that increases our cleaning costs as a city,” said councillor Katrina Bull.
“We will take action against those people who continue to litter, helping us in our objective to be the cleanest of all the major cities.

RE: Smokers forced to pay out £550 for dropping fag butts as i have said previously, if they had knifed someone they would have got community service, i have put up a smoking shelter at the side of the pub so they can use it, but some still prefer to go outside, now it looks like i will have to put up a cigarette bin. Following bombing campaigns in this country litter bins all but disappeared in my area. Try finding one on a railway platform these days. Local councils may also care to empty the bins where they are provided. Smokers forced to pay out £550 for dropping fag butts I believe Singapore was the first country to apply strong litter laws. The streets are pristine. But the government put litter bins every 50 yards everywhere so there is no reason for people to drop litter. As usual our councils love the power to impose fines but do not supply bins or empty the few that are about. What is a smoker supposed to do with a lighted cigarete butt? (I can imagine the crass replies from the antis!) Or is this the begining of a smoking in the street ban? This post replies to this thread |

RE: Smokers forced to pay out £550 for dropping fag butts Councillor Katrina Bull is 100% right when she says the city is not an ash tray, it's a pity she did'nt oppose the smoking ban like most of us are doing , then we could have kept our ash trays indoors without bothering anyone else. But help is on the way for smokers, there is a general election comming soon and we can all tell Labour exactly how we feel about their successful smoking ban, which has closed hundreds of pub, clubs and bingo halls and put thousands of people out of work.
