A licensee has paid out £14,308 for screening Sky using a domestic card in an out of court settlement.
The civil action against Neil Burgess, of Notleys in Lowestoft, Suffolk was brought by Russell-Cooke solicitors on behalf of Sky.
The case is unusual as it is a civil rather than a criminal prosecution – in prior cases licensees have also lost their personal licences.
Sky’s investigation agents visited the pub as part of their ongoing campaign to crack down on licensees avoiding paying commercial rates.
“The settlement from Mr Burgess reflects how seriously this matter is taken,” said a Sky spokesperson.
“Sky is committed to protecting the interests of our legitimate customers and will continue to take action against licensees who break the law.
“We consistently undertake a number of activities that ultimately can lead to legal action against individuals who choose to enjoy the benefits of Sky programming without the correct commercial agreement.’’

RE: £14,000 fine for illegal Sky Isn't it funny though since the ruling of the Karen Murphy case and the foreign satellite suppliers to be heard in Europe things have been pretty quiet on the ongoing prosecutions of showing foreign football vowed by the Premier League and MPS. Could it be that they are finding it hard to bring the prosecutions ahead due to the recent rulings? I may be speaking too soon but it does not seem that the PL/MPS are rushing to bring these prosecutions ahead otherwise we would have heard something by now. This post replies to this thread |

RE: £14,000 fine for illegal Sky personally i wouldnt take the risk - but i wonder why sky cant help out small and new operators like us who have taken a pub which was on its knees and are slowly building it back up ( against the current trend - thank goodness) by having a starter package based on turnover and number of years in residence rather than thier heavy handed pay loads of cash or else approach - thier charges make it totally unviable to have the service which therefore leaves customers who want to watch the footie with no alternative but to go elsewhere - surely they can see that if they were to offer some differing deals they would benefit if screening increased the trade This post replies to this thread |
