A licensee has paid out £14,308 for screening Sky using a domestic card in an out of court settlement.
The civil action against Neil Burgess, of Notleys in Lowestoft, Suffolk was brought by Russell-Cooke solicitors on behalf of Sky.
The case is unusual as it is a civil rather than a criminal prosecution – in prior cases licensees have also lost their personal licences.
Sky’s investigation agents visited the pub as part of their ongoing campaign to crack down on licensees avoiding paying commercial rates.
“The settlement from Mr Burgess reflects how seriously this matter is taken,” said a Sky spokesperson.
“Sky is committed to protecting the interests of our legitimate customers and will continue to take action against licensees who break the law.
“We consistently undertake a number of activities that ultimately can lead to legal action against individuals who choose to enjoy the benefits of Sky programming without the correct commercial agreement.’’

RE: £14,000 fine for illegal Sky sky would rather have a box in every house in england, that is why the pub subscriptions are prohibitively high. They may get their way if the pub cos continue their destruction of the industry. Since our pub was quoted around £13000 for this years sky bill you can see why it makes sense to run the risk. We however barred murdoch from our pub 4 years ago and haven't looked back. Most of the football crowd were not good customers, either rowdy, or nursing two drinks for an entire game. RE: £14,000 fine for illegal Sky I suggested to them that the rateable value method is unfair It should go on the capacity in tv area at £x per person, I would rather pay per view on all games with a small flat monthly rate thus letting me choose the games people will watch and avoiding the other games. But I've argued all this till I'm blue in the face with them. You tell them you're cancelling domestic and they give you a stupidly low rate for 3 months, yet when I told them I was cancelling my £580 a month, no interest. They can't raid, raiding is illegal, you now have people standing up for their rights, Wait for press release, coming soon re our court case. . . . .
