One of my abiding memories of 2008 will be arriving at King’s Cross at half-past eight on a July evening. As my taxi sped through the London streets I noticed every pub was packed with people watching television. In the end I felt compelled to join them and watch the last few minutes of the Wimbledon final between Nadal and Federer.
Earlier this summer, some of the capital’s more enterprising pubs decked their establishments in the colours of one or other of the participants of Euro 2008 — with those choosing Spain proving particularly far-sighted and profitable.
Three forthcoming key decisions by regulators, politicians and judges will shape the future of watching sport in pubs in Britain.
Nick Bish and his team at the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers have played a blinder in persuading Ofcom (the communications regulator) to consider commercial as well as domestic consumers as part of its current competition investigation into the pay TV market.

RE: My Shout: Murdoch’s TV sport grip may weaken Perhaps John Grogan forgets that to have SKY is up to the individual pub or club as to whether or not they can afford it. What is very evident is the impact the smoking ban is having on all our drinking establishments. With such a small majority maybe John is worried about his re-elcetion and his voting in favour of a total smoking ban might just come back to haunt him. But John can always rely on his fellow MP Andy Burham to reassure him that the ban is working and that we all dutifully accept it. Watching SKY in your local will not be an option for hundreds of thousands of us as our pubs and clubs close down as the likes of John Grogan and Andy Burham stand by and watch, remember "CAN'T SMOKE. WON'T VOTE". This post replies to this thread |

RE: My Shout: Murdoch’s TV sport grip may weaken I have had sky since its inception, it is without doubt, the best sports program going but their relentless price increases might i say criminal increases or doing a lot of damage to most licensees,a pub with a capacity of say 30 can pay thousands more then a pub holding 100 all because of location sky need to redress this, why is it we always see our politicians like john grogan, sitting in well to do pubs with their fancy beer gardens, good food and real ale pleading we support pubs have they not got the bottle to visit an off street pub they seem only interested in their own back yard, well the day of reckoning is coming and all those mps who caused the closure of thousands of community pubs and clubs, not forgetting bingo, halls thousands on the dole with their criminal smoking ban, will feel the wrath of 15 million smokers who have been disenfranchised and i might add quite a few non smokers who have lost their drinking dens, lastly i would say to Sean vote, vote for the party that promises to repeal the ban IE UKIP, the Tories seem to be coming round to the thought of part repealing the smoking ban This post replies to Sean Spillane > RE: My Shout: Murdoch’s TV sport grip may weaken |
