Some readers may remember the heady days when supermarkets sold just one in 20 of all the pints consumed in Britain. Now, 30 years on, it’s very nearly one in two. And it’s set to tilt to at least six pints in every 10 very shortly if the move to the off-trade continues its current breakneck momentum. Coors’ rise this week can only accelerate the trend.
Hats off to them, Tesco, Asda and the rest of the discounters have been brilliant at stealing our business. They saw cheap alcohol was the way to draw in the crowds. They turned the screw ruthlessly on brewers and other drinks suppliers to get rock-bottom prices. And then they priced it even lower and promoted it as hard as they could to consumers who just could not believe their luck. Particularly those who only get £5 pocket money a week.
Aggressive tactics like these were bad enough for pubs. What’s made resistance well-nigh impossible have been hefty duty rises, which supermarkets “absorb” (ie, push back to suppliers), but that l

RE: Time to get grocers off our turf I watched Andrew Pring on GMTV earlier in the week and I was amazed that when he gave an explanation as to why pubs were having a hard time he never once mentioned the smoking ban. Everyone is entitled to their own opionion, perhaps Andrew could briefly explain if the smoking ban is off limits for discussion on live morning TV. I have sent the same programme many TXT messages when they ask for our opinions and they have never yet acknowledged the harmful impact the ban is having on the hospitality trade. I only wish I had the same opportunity that Andrew had, perhaps he can put in a good word for me and get me on GMTV. Sean Spillane Luton This post replies to this thread |

The smoking ban is a horribly necessary move which is part of cultural shift. It's not party political, anyone suggesting that new labour are to blame are just firing blanks. Any colour government would have brought it in, no matter that the consequences for many businesses dealing with people who smoke are dire. Someone should ban Rocky I think. Time to get grocers off our turf Oh dear, are we still obsessed with shooting the wrong horse. If Government interferes in the market at our behest, you can be sure that they will do it again when we do not want any interference: "Beware G(r)eeks bearing gifts".............Although there is a good case to be made for requiring Brewers / Drinks Companies to sell to the On and Off Trade at the same price and then let market forces act. Alcohol would not be such an attractive loss leader then. This post replies to this thread |
