Pubs are now closing at the rate of five a day — up 33% on last year as the credit crunch and Government enforced duty rises and red tape take a monumental toll on the industry.

The shocking figures, produced for the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) by consultants CGA, reveal that 36 pubs a week are now closing. Last year’s figures showed 27 a week were closing — a total of 1,409 closed during the year.

Pubs are now closing nine times faster than in 2006 and 18 times faster than in 2005.

The rapid increase in closures highlights just what damage will be done if the Chancellor pushes ahead with planned duty increases of 2% above inflation for the next four years in a sop to the health lobby.

The BBPA is urging all pubs to ring their bells at 1pm next Monday as a symbolic wake-up call to Westminster.

“These numbers are a stark illustration of the pressures on the pub sector,” said BBPA chief executive Rob Hayward. “Economic stresses and strains are being felt by every househo

RE: Pub crisis: Five close every day

Ring a bell? so playing with your Ding a Ling Is going to save the pub game ay? If only all those landlords who have lost their businesses and homes had known that was the secret. The smoking ban is what finished pubs off. The newly biting credit crunch came after the death knell of the smoking ban. And to think ringing a bell will solve anything is downright stupidity. Who is going to hear it.?? Is this the best a so called trade body can come up with.? What is needed is outright civil disobedience to a bad law. Every licencee should refuse to enforce the smoking ban instead of commiting financial suicide by being an unpaid policeman. If only this were to happen the Government would HAVE to take notice. If we have as bad a winter as we had a summer there will be no smokers willing to stand outside to support a licencee that will not support their rights to a social life. There is only one way to survive. Show them that they are wrong and don't go along with this credit crunch rubbish. H

and there will be more. the brewers and pubco,s could have taken a stand against this no smoking law but I saw very little evidence of it. the managing director of my brewing company has been advocating no smoking pubs for years, what chance do we have when run by people like this. My sorry lot wanted to build a sic, smoking solution, as they put it, at a cost of £40.000 and expected me to pay for it by a rent increase as well as coughing up about £15,000 for the lighting and heating necessary.I told them to roll the plans up and insert them but you can see what pressure they can put on a new tenant who blindly follow every whim of a hapless BDM.I calculate that had the directors of my sorry lot were to forego their bonuses and rely on their already inflated wages, sorry, wages you earn, I mean money they get, they could have given every tenant £1000 loyalty bonus to help out in the current climate and still had change.Instead they embark on a selective promotion to get rid of beer they can,t sell. One day the banks will pull the plug, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Agreed on all points.

I have bad news on winters too, even the IPCC have agreed that global warming has been 'postponed'.

They seem to think it's only 'til 2015, fact is it's more likely to be a return to the winters of 50s, 60s & early 70s if not worse.

One thing's for sure, it's going to get COLD over the next 11 years at least!

Pub crisis: Five close every day

I'm quite sure that everyone is right vis smoking ban, cheap booze, hapless Governments, Pubco greed etc....but wake up and smell the air, people: no one is listening and, consequently, we all sound like a bunch of moaning minnies.

The BBPA does NOT represent you and cares not jot for you, indeed, it's hard to think of an official 'trade body' that does give a fig. We need to work out how WE are going to make this unique and very British institution survive. Remember, my fellow 'tied' licencees that WE ARE CUSTOMERS of the Pubcos, we are NOT THEIR RETAILERS: if we alter our mindsets and work together perhaps we will find a way forward, of that I'm sure.

Heads up my friends and let us find a new way for the pub industry to function fairly before more of our friends and colleagues are sacrificed and bankrupted to pay for cheap newspaper headlines, politicians' sound bites and Pubco Execs. bonuses.

PS Apologies for the clumsy and mixed metaphor in paragraph 1.....it's late and I've just finished work!

RE: Pub crisis: Five close every day

Phil is quite right. It was always said (usually by politicians and the sneering middle class press) that people could always find money for the pub (and fags) no matter how hard times were. The sole reason I have stopped going to pubs is the smoking ban. The lousy weather ony adds to the pain. Once a pub loses its customers, and therby its atmosphere, it ceases to have any appeal, even to the non smokers who were supposed to rush in through the doors, post ban. ASH lied and lied again, but they actually never cared about the effect of this ban on our pubs or your livelihood. It ill behoves the BBPA and CAMRA to whine and moan now given that they supported the ban.

Pub crisis: Five close every day

I do believe there is a smoke screen designed by our dear politicians, this is my theory people may not agree but its logical. Too many pubs not enough land, the green party will kick up enough fuss if development of green belt land is granted so whats left? Pub land complete with all amenities is prime for development is this why pubco's don't care if the pub is open or closed. What is going on to help the housing crisis in this country logic says the government and pubco's know fully whats going on and are in the driving seat of the fate of our pubs.
