News Article Comments : Vending machine ban could break pubs

A massive 74% of licensees believe the smoking ban has been bad for business with 47% laying off staff as a direct result — damning statistics that could become worse if cigarette vending machines are banned.

On the day the Government’s consultation on further tobacco controls ended, which proposes a ban on vending machines, a survey of 912 BII and Federation of Licensed Victuallers Associations members revealed the full extent of devastation the ban has wreaked on the trade.

Before the ban came into effect on 1 July 2007, 54% of trade at pubs was estimated to come from smokers — today that is just 38% with almost no increase in visits from non-smokers to compensate for the drop.

BII chief executive John McNamara said there was “severe apprehension and concern” over proposals to either ban vending machines, use an infra-red control or token system or even push sales under the counter.

A total of 42% of members said they believed a ban on vending machines would be bad for trade. Ven

RE: Vending machine ban could break pubs

When in Holland at the end of April, a colleague needed cigs, went to the bar and exchanged money for a token that was then inserted into the nearby machine. Ever so simple , no complex technology to go wrong and acts as a monitor against underage purchasing.

RE: Vending machine ban could break pubs

The Labour lets ban everything motto just sends things underground, they are so thick they have no idea how much duty they are losing because they have no idea how much tobacco is being brought over from Europe, I took out my cigarette machine some time after the smoking ban because it was just an eye saw on the wall not being used and keep a few behind the bar from Booker's, I think it is wrong to keep banning things keep the vending machines but adopt the European methods instead of BAN BAN BAN

RE: Vending machine ban could break pubs

The idea of a token was put to the DoH 18 months ago and Dawn Primorolo never even considered it saying that a three month consultation period would decide the future of vending machines. Like the smoking ban it's impossible to find out who they actually contacted. They are determined to banish smokers from all public view and are not concerened about our views. A general election will soon be upon us and the best way is to send Labour MPs packing is to throw them out of every pub and private club with two words ringing in their ears "Smoking Ban". There is still time to fight back, we put them into power, we can take that power away, and it will remind any other political party that they must honour election promises, "CAN'T SMOKE, WON'T VOTE".
