News Article Comments : OFT gives green light to Gamestec/Inspired deal

J Mark Dodds

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has given the go-ahead for Gamestec, a division of Danoptra, to acquire Inspired Gaming's pub business.

The deal provides Gamestec with ownership of about 30,000 gaming machines installed in pubs and other outlets throughout the UK. The move will make Gamestec the largets gaming machine supplier to the pub trade.

The ruling means Gamestec can now start to integrate the newly acquired business, currently trading under the name of RLMS Acquisitions, into its operations.

“We will now focus on putting the two businesses together as one, strong and service-led," said Gamestec managing director Stuart Ross.

"The pub industry remains at the core of our business. Our customers are being supportive throughout this period of change and we are working hard to repay that support."

OFT gives green light to Gamestec/Inspired deal

I'm sure I'm not alone in finding this very irritating.

OFT gives green light to Gamestec/Inspired deal

A tied tenant rents his machine from a pubco nominated supplier and because of this the suppliers pay royalty payments back to the pubcos. In short, the pubcos have squeezed every last penny from the suppliers. The pubcos received £77million last year from the gaming machine companies (Enterprise £33million, Punch £40million) and this is the real reason why Inspired and the like, have pulled out of the pub market; it just wasn’t cost effective.

There are more important issues in the AWP market that have still to come to light; The pubcos have almost conceded the fact that at some stage the Government will remove the tie on fruit machines. They are frantically trying to piece together an online gaming system deal whereby instead of royalty payments they will receive a share of the profits instead. Do you really think they were going to lie down and lose all of the income from AWP’s?
