Going down the pub for a few pints is one of the ideas put forward for a new bank holiday to celebrate Britishness.
Immigration minister Liam Byrne has put forward 27 ideas in a new pamphlet, A more united Britain, following Gordon Brown's proposal for a new bank holiday to unite the communities of Britain. The likely date for a British bank holiday would be the second bank holiday in May.
Ideas on how to celebrate being British include celebrating through drinking as well as a Live Aid style concert, street parties, morris dancing and sports events.
The idea has, however, prompted criticism from opposition parties accusing Brown of trying to promote Britishness only because he is a Scot leading the country.
But a move to promote a British bank holiday would surely be welcomed by a beleaguered pub trade.
Do you think a British Bank Holiday is a good idea? Would it help boost trade? Let us know by hitting Post a comment below.

RE: Pub is place to celebrate Britishness This article is intreging. Why has this pamphlet come from the Immigration Minister, and where does the concept of Britishness fit in with the bombshell contained in a Times online article, that the Government has allowed Sharia Law Courts to have legal staus in the UK. Anyone who knows anything about these courts is that they are far from Family friendly, there will be British women Muslims who will now fear for their safety at the hands of these courts. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article4749183.ece I read this from a UKIP Chairman we all know. " I believe that the news announced in the Times at the weekend will do untold harm to community relations and harmony. This decision will I believe heighten tension amongst some of the more volatile areas of the UK and lead to a major rise in support for extreme groups such as the National Front, and BNP. I also feel that Muslim women will now feel more vulnerable, as it is no secret that under Sharia law women are second class citizens, something that is not compatible with UK law." RE: Pub is place to celebrate Britishness "The idea has, however, prompted criticism from opposition parties accusing Brown of trying to promote Britishness only because he is a Scot leading the country." That's a pathetic reason for criticising GB. As a Scot he will understand a damned sight more about what Britishness means than any English opposition party person. The English have an awful tendency to regard anyone from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland as being English with weird accents that somehow impede their ability to be civilised. As for an extra bank holiday well yes, but a three day working week with four day weekends would be a much more constructive way of living our lives. Wouldn't need bank holidays then. edited by: J Mark Dodds at: 15/09/2008 10:49:19 This post replies to Alastair Elliott > RE: Pub is place to celebrate Britishness |

RE: Pub is place to celebrate Britishness How about being proud of being a PATRIOT and showing it. I do, and am very proud of it.I get sick of people saying that they are leaving the country because of...... well i wont,i wont give in to New Labour and let them destroy our Great Country,i will stay and make sure that things are as they should be "BRITISHNESS". We must stop the stupidity of this government, LIKE a free recipe book to all 11 year olds , cost £2 million plus then you hear that between 12,000 & 15,000 of our elderly citizens will die due to energy poverty this winter. Now that makes me very angry indeed. This post replies to Peter Harvey > RE: Pub is place to celebrate Britishness |

RE: Pub is place to celebrate Britishness How about the BILLIONS wasted on wind turbines which have to be backed up by conventional power stations on warm standby?? All they do is increase everyones electricity bills, leading to the thousands of O.A.P.s that you say, (rightly), will die. Dave E. Pub is place to celebrate Britishness Left hand, right hand. Until a trip to the pub is not viewed behind closed doors as an extra burden on police and healthcare budgets, this idea is hogwash. The only rebranding I see happening is that of the local as the source of trouble (binge drinkers, drug deals, you name it). Ultimately it doesn't matter how many publicans want their pubs to stay open. Until the pub is reclaimed in the public mind as what it was and should again be, the LOCAL, it's a losing battle. A pub is pub food, bar games, darts leagues, a friendly pint, a place to relax and it's time that was promoted before people forget those things ever existed. The local is a part of Britishness and always has been. This post replies to this thread |

Pub is place to celebrate Britishness No problem. When we are all out of business we can always celebrate being British down at the Chinese or the Indian!! This post replies to this thread |

(and a very minor european state at that) No one see anything wrong with that? Ken Nason This post replies to this thread |
