News Article Comments : Chancellor guilty of 'gross cultural vandalism'
The Chancellor's is guilty of "an act of gross cultural vandalism", according to Shepherd Neame boss Jonathan Neame.
Neame said the 8% duty hike, due on Monday to off-set the 2.5% VAT cut, was "vindictive" and "born of ignorance".
He said: “The Government continues to regard the Great British pub as a tax-collection point on one hand and a social problem on the other. They have no regard for the livelihoods of the thousands of people who work in Kent’s pubs, nor the suppliers who rely on their trade.”
“There is no good reason why brewers and publicans should be excluded in such a spiteful fashion. Pubs make an invaluable contribution to the Kent economy — they serve as a huge attraction to tourists and are the last bastion of community life.
“This Government’s futile attempts to raise revenue have repeatedly failed; the 9% duty increase at the last budget has resulted in a £31m drop in revenue.

I have no particular love for them but it would be bad news for the country. Will it take a major closure of a major brewer for this government to sit up and take notice that it is busy exporting our jobs and economy? Or will they not notice even then?? Chancellor guilty of 'gross cultural vandalism' And of course the Chancellor will REMOVE the 8% tax hike once VAT returns to normal......?? This government continues unabated in its quest to destroy the Great British Pub and all it stands for in our communities all over the Country. RE: Chancellor guilty of 'gross cultural vandalism' After the New Year we must seriously act against this government. They have declared open war on the hospitality trade and all we seem to do is tell each other about the rights and wrongs it brings. Bring organisations like the CIU, NULSC, the Royal British Legion together and as one unified body, have every pub and club displaying the same posters and banners and then where ever in the country you go you will see the same message .
