Independent brewers continue to outperform the overall beer market, with the local brewing sector up 10% in 2008 and brewers predicting a 15% rise this year.

That’s according to the new edition of the Society of Independent Brewers’ (Siba) Local Brewing Industry Report.

This shows like-for-like volumes among Siba members grew 7% in 2008 — the rest of the increase came from brewers not in operation in 2007. It compares to a 5.5% year-on-year fall in sales by British Beer and Pub Association members in 2008.

The data is based on a survey of nearly 200 Siba members, mainly smaller brewers, in November and December.

We're having a blistering year with real ale sales, which were already good! As the national producers put up their prices by 15-20% (to the wholesale trade), real ale gets better and better value. Lots of lager drinkers are seeing the light and voting with their wallets. Long may it continue!

Local brewers, free of tie prices = growth for you and the local brewer. Don't fall into the trap of buying off the SIBA list from your pubco. I know a couple of local brewers who will deal direct with me for £45 per firkin, if I order the same beer via my Pubco I pay £77 and the brewer who has to deliver it gets £40, simple math= £37 for pubco, over priced beer on the bar for the drinker and less margin for the producer!! So what we should all do(If you have a guest beer right) is buy local, sell cheaper and reduce the Pubcos' volumes. SIBA could then report a real bucking of trends this time next year.

John, it's hardly surprising when a pint of mediocre lager costs over 3 quid in some places. JDW do a cracking Ruddles best for 99p and although their other real ales aren't quite that cheap, they're doing a storm with them.
