Search hard enough amongst the gloom of what’s happening in the pub and beer market right now, you’ll find the odd shaft of light. cask ale is enjoying a renaissance, outperforming every other sector.

This is especially welcome since as yet Tesco et al haven’t worked out how to give their shoppers the true “beer at home experience”.

So cask ale is still a real reason to visit the pub. Cause to celebrate perhaps?

You’d think that the beardy weirdies of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) would be happy that their favourite brew is seemingly coming to the rescue of at least part of the British pub scene.

But no! Apparently, according to the malcontents of Camra’s sandal-clad, whisker-stroking stormtroopers a guest ale’s not a guest ale unless it comes from some oddball brewery down a country lane and is served with bits in it under a name like Knackered Old Cripplecock.

At Marston’s we have five proper breweries, six brand families, 88 beers brewed in total, 35 ales available pe

'It’s hard to keep the gobby hobbits happy'

That's it Kevin, we agree to disagree. It's all about personal choice, and everyone has a viewpoint, including you, me and CAMRA. However, for the Managing Director of a Company who's main product is Real Ale to use a trade paper to express his personal views, and to pigeon hole, stereotype, generalise or whatever the expresion may be, an organisation that promotes the stuff, could be shooting himself in the foot. I am a CAMRA member and a landlord, don't have a beer belly (well I'm working on that one), nor a beard, except when I haven't had time to shave, and definately don't wear sandals (except on the odd holiday I manage to sneak away on), though wouldn't critisise those who do! It's a free Country (just), diverse and interesting? Maybe Mr Oliver wants us to be clean shaven, blond, 6 foot tall and cow tow to his every command?

RE: 'It’s hard to keep the gobby hobbits happy'

Oooooooooo................. he is a cheeky boy this one!

Suspect though is fully aware of potential controvesy his words would spark.

His organisation is a "born again" outfit & like such organisations work hard to spread the gospel, how ever one can only speak as one finds, many thought Jennings would face the axe rapidly once W&D got them, not so & now with Ringwood & the Oxfordshire set up & it's phalanx of products on board the cheeky boy seeks to remind us this is new W&D-sorry Marstons, who under their old uber might made sure your choice was stricly limited to Julia Hanson & Banks the same bar the name, reckoning once they got Mr Hurdle & his boys out of the way in Burton there was a trick or two to be gained by keeping Burton brewing, despite the carnage @ Mansfield.

Well so far they seem to be making a pretty good fist of it, just hope the number crunchers dont get in the way with "less is more" & despite what he says there is not batch brewing going on in the old Allied fashion with Benskins/Ind Coope/Friary/etc bitters being the same with just a variant in the dry hopping.

As for the personal habits of CAMRA members it's probaly best not to go there, pity cheeky boy had to invoke their precence, ruined a good bit of PR.

FYI Mr Oliver, if they are brewed by the owner company and not availiable regularly they are "seasonal" not "guest" ales. A guest ale is one which comes from a brewery not owned by the owner of the pub.

They may have been guest ales before you bought the brand but they are no longer.

RE: 'It’s hard to keep the gobby hobbits happy'

In the 1970's the stereotype Camra member may well have had the beard, sandals and beer belly, but Mr Oliver obviously has not been to any beer festivals of any kind in decades judging by his blinkered views! There are very few Camra members in relation to the 100, 000 members nationally that have the beard, sandals and beer belly, and a relatively large percentage of members and attendees at festivals are women!

Also, Camra members do not walk around with a big neon sign on their head saying that they are Camra members. In fact you can spend an evening in almost any.......

.......... real ale pub and not know how many Camra members are in that establishment at any given moment, especially as the large majority do not have the beard, sandals and beer belly!

How Mr Oliver can be so naive is beyond comprehension and I only hope that his ignorance of the real world doesn't lead to his downfall due to declining sales.
