News Article Comments : Oldham hits all its bars with reviews

Trading standards have ordered licence reviews of all 22 pubs and clubs in central Oldham to force draconian restrictions on trading — including operating “post office-style” bar queues.

Making venues pay for police, banning customers ordering more than two drinks per visit to the bar and banning drinking in queues are among the alarming measures proposed.

It’s believed to be the first time a review of all licences has been called in one go. The British Beer & Pub Association backed Oldham’s “objective”. Noctis and JD Wetherspoon expressed serious concern, and they all question the legality of the move.

The news follows an escalation in drinks promotions, with several bars running all-inclusive drinks deals. Last week the licence of Brownz in Yorkshire Street was suspended for 28 days after stabbings on the street. Oldham said the promotions cause “greater drunkenness” and “a rise in crime and disorder”.

"Alcohol for less than 75p per unit"

I hope they are applying this review accross the board - INCLUDING the supermarkets, from where a majority of theose out for the evning will have visited and purchased cheap alcohol prior to going out.

RE: Oldham hits all its bars with reviews

I doubt it will include supermarkets but whats the bets that the leaders of this movement are tea total puritans who would rather everyone spent there time at home in quiet contemplation?

Stupendous.

The only thing I don't see is a rule saying that people talking in the queue will be spanked.

Is chewing gum allowed, or will you be sent to detention?

I get one clear and simple message from this: if you want to be treated like a child, go for a pint in Oldham.

Pathetic.

And for industry leaders to support this puerile nonsense is beyond belief.

Is there anything these people WON'T agree to?

John Hutson, chief executive of JDW, which faces reviews at two Oldham pubs, said: “We’ve all been treated the same. We don’t believe irresponsible drinks promotions apply in our two units.” Given there are nearly 2 units in one of his 99p pints I'm a little puzzled. Oldham however remain childish.

The duplicate posts usually happen if you hit 'refresh' on the web browser or press F5 on the page. It performs a postback using the last performed actions in the session for that page - so the whole page is refreshed - which includes your post being resent which is still held in the session for that page.

This is the default behaviour of the web browser. To overcome it, the web developer of the forum would have to use magic.

Oldham hits all its bars with reviews

we are a pub/bar just outside oldham town center, we are just starting a drinks promo today which see's me dropping £1 of the price of most my drinks,,,, i have signs going up today too,, i have had to do this to compete with the liberal club accross the rd and ever declining sales , still the club will be cheaper than me,, but i bet i get a call in the next day or two with complaints from my licencing officer,,,, why cant people see whats really going on,,,, maybe it would be best if i change my name to tesco then we would get left alone,, some times i wonder who's in charge of this country the goverment or tesco,, maybe the pubcos should take a leaf out of tescos book and try selling drinks below cost ,,, now that would be the day

Interesting replies, but does anybody know what the reality is like in this part of Oldham and whether TS may have reason to take some form of action?

Drink all you can doesn't happen in my locals.
