Pub on the lookout for new retailer after facelift

12:00pm Tuesday 14th April 2009

A MIDDLEWICH pub is looking for a new retailer despite being given a £100,000 facelift to bring it to life just months ago.

Renovation work was completed on The White Bear, on Wheelock Street, at the beginning of the year.

The project started after former landlord Peter Jones made a case to the brewery, Enterprise Inns, that the building had become an eyesore.

But after forking out for the ‘necessary works’, Enterprise Inns says its current retailers want to move on.

A spokesman said: “The current retailers have been running the pub for over a year but have decided the pub doesn’t fit in with their long term objective and have decided to move on, therefore we are looking to recruit a new retailer.”

So the pub gets a facelist and the tennants want out? I think this is a rental issue again.

Similar story near me, bloke gets a massive refurb done on the pub paid for by the pubco (around 150k i believe) then less than a year later he's gone. New couple move in and they are struggling almost from the off. Their story as told to me is that the rent and the tie doesn't give them a fighting chance.

The Yarborough in Gainsborough, £300K refurb 4 years ago - same time as ours - 10 yes 10+ tenants since then, now closed for sale for £200k for alternate use.

Punch pub.

Im surprised they closed it. 10 tenants in 4 years = big bucks on churn, a bit of a cash cow really.

Except for the fact that the last 8 went in with no F&F and 3 months free rent, then left as soon as they had to start paying.
