The Budget has sown that the Government does not give a XXXX about Britain's pubs.

That is the view of Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers chief executive Nick Bish following the Chancellor's 2% duty rise.

“The Budget proves that the Chancellor does not give a XXXX for Britain’s local pubs," said Bish.

"What we needed was a tonic from the Chancellor, instead we have a double whammy of tax increases — with a penny a pint from midnight tonight and another toxic shock when the VAT cut is reversed at the end of the year.”

The ALMR also condemned the continued favouritism being shown to other industries at the expense of pubs and bars.

“The Chancellor has already spent 3.5% of GDP on bailing out the banks, £2bn to save the car industry, but he appears to baulk at investing in pubs and bars. Now we have investment in ‘green collar’ jobs and ‘low carbon’ technologies.

"The Chancellor must beware — all the glitters is not gold and it is questionable whether these new, sexy indus

General election.Come on . IF every town pub had a sign or blackboard with general election outside, this would be a start. GET THEM OUT OR THEY WILL ENENTUALLY GET YOU ALL OUT.

Actually, that's possibly not a bad idea Stephen. There are some 60,000 or so pubs out there - that's some 60,000 billboards, and if just 100 owners, staff and customers from each all vote against this government of over-regulating and over-taxing parasites, that equates to 6 million lost votes. Surely that would be sufficient to put Brown, Darling and their cronies in the same situation as many in our business are facing - on the dole.

'Darling doesn't give a XXXX for Britain's pubs'

Nick Bish's position simply doesn't make sense.

The increase today amounts to around 1p on a pint of beer. This isn't causing pub failures. The whole Axe the Tax campaign was frankly embarassing, particularly once we had "Its a Knockout" characters dancing round Westminster.

Pubcos are consistently charging up to 75p per pint too much to their tenants and across the country pubs are still being subjected to outrageous claims for rent increases at review, even in this downturn, using corrupted guidance authored by employees and agents of the main pubcos.

Its time to focus on the real issues in the pub sector and to stop being sucked into the distraction tactics of the BBPA and the rent of the Axe the Tax campaign.

Publicans aren't represented properly by the big trade bodies and ministers know that.

Is nonsense to imagine that the Conservatives will take a different approach. David Cameron is rightly committed to properly resourcing the health service. He isn't going to recommend anything, tax concessions or otherwise, that result in more drinking and more pressure on the NHS.
