There’s a large poster on the wall of the waiting room at Corfe Castle railway station in Dorset showing all the train lines in the Wessex area in the 1950s.
There was a multitude of lines, covering every town and many villages in the region. The train was seen as a vital public service, uniting communities.
Then came Dr Richard Beeching. In the early 1960s he chopped, axed and annihilated the railway system. Many lines disappeared. Towns and villages no longer had access to the railway network and many isolated communities withered and died.
One of the many internet entries for Dr Beeching calls him “Britain’s most hated civil servant”. It’s astonishing today, 40 years later, that many people asked in newspaper interviews which figure from history they dislike most cite the late and unlamented doctor.
But now he has a rival. He is called Alistair Darling. His official title is Chancellor of the Exchequer but Butcher of the British Pub would be a more accurate description.

RE: Act now to stop Darling’s axe Wonderful speech Roger, now what are you going to do. How many times will we have to listen and read about the deaf ear of politicians and do nothing about it. Darling, Brown, Smith, Blears. Balls etc etc don't give a damn about us and they will be quietly planning their opposition speeches when Labour loses the next election. But you may ask will the Tories be any different and keep blaming the previous government for the mess we're in and have no option but to raise taxes. Stop lobbying the Prime Minister and his Cabinet because they have proved they are not interested. The immediate target from today should be the rank and file of the Labour government these are the people we should be telling that enough is enough. Not one Labour MP will concede that he or she will sitting on the opposite side of the House next year and they will happily continue to WORK in Westminster on our behalf. All the fighting factions who tried to get Labour to listen must come under one fighting umbrella. We can't all be in charge so some how very very soon we must combine as one fighting unit and start telling all Labour MPs we will not vote for them next time. These are the very poeple Brown and Darling rely on to back any tax increase. Trade papers like the MA , the Publican and private club journals reach out to millions of pub and club goers every week and month. We have the fighting force in place all over the UK and it's never been done before so lets star by bringing everyone together. In the papers and journals I've mentioned we need to print one standard POSTER giving out the same message so where ever Labour MPs go they cannot escape our disgust and determinatuion to punish them if they won't change their minds. Time is running out, the battle lines have been drawn by Alistair Darling, this is one fight we must not lose. This post replies to this thread |
