A senior influential policeman has called for a minim price of 80p per unit on alcohol and a complete ban on all alcohol advertising.

Mike Craik, Association of Chief Police Officers national spokesperson for alcohol and licensing, pointed to estimates that a minimum price of 50p a unit would reduce consumption by 6% but an 80p price would lead to a 19% decrease.

"It will upset a lot of people in the industry, although some do support it," said Craik, speaking at the Westminster Health Forum.

Support for minimum pricing also came from chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance Ian Gilmore, Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) chief executive Mike Benner and director for the Centre for Public Health Mark Bellis but Craik went further in calling for the minimum price to be 80p.

He also called for all alcohol advertising to be banned and for all advertising revenue to instead be spent on responsible drinking campaigns.

"Advertising doesn't get a mention in the mandatory code — everybody is scared

that 19% would be the middle age drinkers who cause no problems at all, its the younger elliment you are looking to control, but hang on dont you have the powers to take these people to court, why dont you use the powers you have

Easy targets and all that, Edward, we all know the Police talk a good talk but are basically ineffective, they have always had the powers to stop the yobbos but instead blame us for the mess that they refuse to sort out.

What function do these senior Police officers play? Try catching some criminals and not interfering in the lives of hard working non speeding, non smoking (in public places), non drug using, non litter dropping, non racially aggravating law abiding memebers of the public.

How far detached from reality are they?

We then have an MP - an MP no less - who is going to base government strategy on his experience as a Student Union par person - well that says it all!! He doesnt even realise that it was COKE (sniff) that was 80p!!!

What happened to our once Great nation?

I think that one of the strangest things about the law relating to us is while it is an offence to serve alcohol to under 18's and an offence for anyone to try to procure alcohol for under 18's, it is not an offence for un der 18's to try to buy alcohol, why?

RE: Top cop: ban all alcohol advertising

John, it IS an offence for someone under 18 to purchase or attempt to purchase alcohol. I think you might have meant that the crime is never followed by a prosecution. Even if the 'seller' reported the attempt, I'd be very surprised if the police did any more than congratulate the 'seller' on his refusal to sell.
