Alcohol Concern has hit out at the industry's £100m responsible drinking campaign.
Chief executive Don Shenker said it is a "poor substitute" for the proposed mandatory alcohol retailing code.
The £100m Campaign for Smarter drinking campaign will see outdoor advertising, signs, drink mats in pubs, on-pack and point of sale displays in shops to deliver a responsible drinking message under the strapline “why let good times go bad?”
It's set to last more than five years and has been developed by more than 45 companies, including pub operators and drinks producers.
Shenker said: “The drinks industry has a very poor track record of adhering to Government agreements to raise alcohol awareness. Both in terms of previously agreed funding for the Drinkaware Trust and labelling of alcohol products, the drinks industry fell far short of intended targets.
"This new initiative appears to be yet another example of the drinks industry trying desperately to avoid mandatory legislation to pass on

RE: Charity slates trade's £100m responsible drinking campaign The government will be dammed no matter what it does. Nice to know that the 'drinks industry' can find £100m for some drip mats rather than helping struggling publicans. Mind you perhaps it will save the taxpayers money being wasted so that more can be given to tight fisted 'publicly owned' BANKS!!!!!! This post replies to this thread |

RE: Charity slates trade's £100m responsible drinking campaign Question for all concerned: How many people have stopped or not started smoking because of the health warnings on cigarette packets, or the smoking ban? I know 90% of my customers were smokers before, and have not changed their habbit since. What we need is for the supermarkets to charge the same as pubs, then people will either stop drinking because of the cost or return to the pubs where drinking is supervised and controlled. As the the ad says "simples" This post replies to this thread |

RE: Charity slates trade's £100m responsible drinking campaign Who the hell does Don Shenker think he is, patronising us all as though he is our head teacher. Believe it or not Mr Shenker we are all big grown up people who know that smoking a ciggy is not good for you and that alcohol ABUSE is not good for you. But if you actually thought about the problem logically and did not just blame pubs like an imbesilic muppet we might get soemwhere. Yes we do see some people who have had to much to drink leaving pubs sometimes, yes a very small minority do get into trouble sometimes but the vast vast majority of pubgoers are law abiding people socialising in a nice friendly atmosphere. They are also in the ONLY place where alcohol intake is MONITORED and SUPERVISED. Mr Shenker ought to aim his wrath where it belongs, the supermarkets who blatantly sell alcohol irresponsibly and target special events to heavily discount alcohol, using it as a loss leader to entice people in. Alcoholics do not frequent pubs, there are more and more of them and they all get drunk at home on supermarket plonk which is sometimes as much as 10 times cheaper than in pubs. What Mr Shenker should be doing is praising pubs and asking the gvmnt to help keep pubs open and stop supermarkets selling alcohol. Step back and look at the problem logically Mr Shenker, 50 pubs a week are closing, more and more people are drinking at home, the gvmnt has allowed everyone to sell alcohol (Unbelievably even filling stations !), and supermarkets are selling it cheaper than water. THERE ARE YOUR PROBLEMS ! This post replies to this thread |

RE: Charity slates trade's £100m responsible drinking campaign Very well written, why not help pubs for a change. I drove past Lidel today with their biggest offer on the window being on lager 54p a can! Pubs and clubs are the only montored environment, but let the pubcos and supermarkets have their way and their wont be any left. As for selling alcohol at Petrol stations, i never understood that one, let alone allowing them to sell it 24hrs a day. Charity slates trade's £100m responsible drinking campaign This industry needs to be asking one question over and over again. Namely, "Do you want alcohol to be consumed in a Safe, Secure and Controlled Environment or in an Unsafe, Insecure and Uncontrolled Environment?" No-one is going to stop the consumption of alcohol (either legal or illegal), so that question needs to be put to Governments (local and national), "anti-alcohol lobbyists" and any others who keep trying to poke their noses into our businesses. If everyone can ask their M.P.'s , assuming that you can find them during their three-months-long holidays, then perhaps the penny might drop for enough of them!!
