News Article Comments : 'Pub drinking more dangerous than at home'

Drinking in the pub is "potentially more explosive" than doing so at home, according to a senior Tesco lobbyist.

Emma Reynolds, the supermarket's head of Government affairs, told a conference on women and binge drinking today: "Pubs can potentially be a more explosive environment to drink in than the home."

She qualified this by pointing to problems "when drunk people get together".

Reynolds was speaking in response to claims that pushing up the price of alcohol in supermarkets would mean more people going to pubs.

Earlier, Thames Valley Police Chief Constable Sara Thornton said licensing reform had increased the workload for police.

She said three sergeants and 24 constables currently patrol central Oxford between 10pm and 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. This compares to two sergeants and 12 constables four years ago, before the Licensing Act was introduced.

RE: 'Pub drinking more dangerous than at home'

Great. What sort of information does TescoWoman draw from to support that statement? My pub is slap bang in the middle of some of the most difficult street drinking problems in the UK - the result of a concentration of nhs services dealing with clients with severe alcohol and drug related addiction problems. The area has many addiction clinics and drop in centres that bring in people from three boroughs for specialist treatment services.

These people are encouraged NOT to drink/hang out at home where there is no supervision whatsoever. Public spaces are considered safer for them than their own private spaces.

Well of course it is! Get tanked up at home on your own and the best you can manage is a fight with yourself. Get tanked up at home venture to the pub for another one and there's a whole load of people for you to pick an arguement with. I'm pleased Tesco have drawn that to my attention. Note to self....stop in, don't move off the couch, smoke loads, drink more, stuff my face with takeaways and stay safe.

A Tesco lobbyist speaking out against the increase in prices, isn't that standard Tescopoly practice - whatever the product?

They are almost as bad as the pubcos when it comes to 'looking after' their 'retail partners'

If you read the full transcript, she does use the word 'potentially' a lot.

Lobyists are not daft. They don't make statements.

My daftness has been known a long time. I mean, why else would I bother to reply to someone like you?

Incidentally, I don't believe the 'potentially' additions were required. I believe that pub drinking is indeed more dangerous than drinking at home.
