Jonathan Paveley, the former Punch Taverns director, has been appointed executive chairman of Admiral Taverns.

He replaces Gary Landesberg following a refinancing of the business, which was concluded earlier this week and saw Lloyds Banking Group acquire an equity stake in the tenanted and leased pub group.

Paveley will take the helm of an experienced management team that also includes Andy Clifford, Lynne D'Arcy and Peter Brook.

Paveley told M&C Report: "It is very early days for me to start talking about the future direction of the business, and clearly it is a challenging market, but the financing difficulties the company faced have been dealt with and I see lots of opportunities."

Paveley appointed to Admiral chair

The mistake we all make is giving organisations in a position of power the credibility of having common sense. The selection of "a safe pair of hands" in City speak is as much making sure that the selection process does not come back and bite the people that made the decision.I have first hand made the mistake of crediting some (not all) major money men and Coprorate high fliers with a degree of intelligence in line with the position they held. All too often it was just smoke and mirrors as echoed by Nigel Wakefield's post. When you look at the crop of recent corporate disasters, including plcs, weren't they all headed by innovative forward thinkers, some of whom were hired specifically to turn the business round. What didn't change was the seed corn they had taken on in the first place.

Paveley starts with a second rate down at heel estate,a generally dispirited bunch of Lessees and the same troops as were there last week to run his empire. The phrase "Hospital Pass" comes readily to mind, unless he can rapidly change any of the three factors mentioned.More than a little difficult !!
