So yet another popular ban is enacted with threats of fines of £2500 just to make sure. Never mind the fact that 76% of the Welsh wanted choice in hospitality. I watched a news report in a cafe which one would have thought on  Monday at 8am would have been packed with 'contractors' had only 2 customers. Needless to say the reporter didn't interview the owner, we can't have the truth coming out can we?

Why doesn't Amanda Sandford and ASH keep their noses out have they not done enough dmage with their lies about ETS/Passive Smoking. “I think to have some sort of shelter is fair enough but I

don't think it's necessary or desirable to go to great expense and

provide very big shelters.” By the way I am still waiting to debate with them. Now we have more officially sanctioned lies.

Both Cardiff council and the Welsh Assembly Government said

there was no requirement under the new laws to provide a shelter but if

pubs were considering building one they needed planning permission It is simply not true to say shelters need planning permission, some may do but not all.

Clive Bates, Director, Action on Smoking and Health, London

It is true that NHS costs are lower than tobacco tax revenues.

Tobacco taxation amounts to £10.5 billion per year whereas a figure for NHS spending on

tobacco related disease is £1.7 billion.  But so what?  The comparison is a

false one.  Tobacco tax is not and never has been a down payment on the cost dealing

with ill health caused by smoking. Amazing what you find out with a little research Clive Bates was also the Co Author of a document for the Prime Ministers strategy unit entitled Personal Responsibility and Changing Behaviour. So not only ASH are rewarded with tax payers money but individuals are also rewarded with FAT bursuries.

Oddly enough, Bob, (or perhaps not), when they did stories on both Grampian TV and BBC Scotland, the reporters were sat in empty pubs (at 6 pm !!) telling us all how fantastic the ban was for business.

I hope that the dichotomy was not lost on the viewing public. More importantly, I hope Licensees also saw through the lie.

So the first fine goes to a gambler in a betting shop. No fine for the shop though, one wonders would that have been the case if it wasn't a multi-national betting chain.

RE: Welsh smoking ban starts

if the betting shop or pub for that matter has the correct signage up, ashtrays removed and has warned the smoker that smoking is banned within the premises (possibly detailing this in an incident book) then they are ok and wont be fined.

Dave you are wrong it is an absolute offence you can plead not guilty and hope the court agrees. It relies merely on the common sense or otherwise of the LA, not to fine the business.

Robert,

If you have done all of the above, refused to serve the offender, asked them to leave and implemented your normal anti-social proceedure - detailing all of this in your log book, you will be fine not fined
