RE: Welsh smoking ban starts

Hi Guys, I am absolutely new to this game, so forgive my first interaction with you lot, who, in my opinion seem to be just here to have a go at each other.  I am in the process of buying a lease on a pub, I am trying to get to grips with how this smoking ban will effect my business.  In my opinion, after consulting smokers, I feel that this wont hit as hard as some people are trying to make out, don't get me wrong guys, i'm a reformed smoker (nothing worse) but they have advised me that it will not stop them going to the pub, if having to go outside for a smoke means staying at home, the social side of going out means more to them.  Some of you guys are making me feel as if i am making a big mistake buying this lease. Chris

I posted a longer response but it seems to have got lost. In essence contact Ken Nason innmentor@aol.com. Taking a lease as far more implications than the smoking ban. He will be able to guide you.

It may happen, Owen. All the happy clappy theorists on here will say business booms. Sadly, in practise, it doesnt. At least, not for all.

Experience in Scotland shows an early influx, purely for the novelty value, then things settle down a bit. Then its back to normal. Then the decline hits. The weather will play its part, too.

Food-led seem to do okay, but wet-led suffer greatly.

I wish you all the best.
