Scotland confirms minimum price plans > RE: Scotland confirms minimum price plans

Minimum pricing and restricting off-sales to over-21s have been proposed for Scotland... Really? It's here already. Neither the local pub nor the local off-licence in my part of East Kilbride will sell to under-21s and they have a challenge 25 policy. It's not difficult to see why. There's a big problem with kids getting drunk and vandalising everything in sight. It's a destructive culture. Someone on the radio was bewailing the fact that this would mean that an eighteen-year-old wouldn't be able to buy a bottle of wine to take home and enjoy in the privacy of his own home. Who has their own home at eighteen? And who takes a bottle of wine home at that age? I've never known it in all my years. There needs to be something done about public drunkenness here and it should be done by putting the fear of god into kids at school. Of course, you can't because there's legislation...

Cher calms pub violence > RE: Cher calms pub violence

Loud rock and rap music encourages drinkers to consume more alcohol and increases loutish behaviour, a university study has revealed. Which University? Have we peer-reviewed papers to peruse? I don't doubt that loud rock brings on a thirst. Violence, though, has more to do with the composition of the crowd. Rock fans band together and enjoy their night out with very little in the way of trouble. Such has been my observation over the last twenty years, from small pub venues, through the likes of Bristol's Fleece and Firkin to Monsters of Rock at Donnington. Why carry out this study in central Glasgow, I wonder? One might just as well study ursine lavatorial habits in the woods.

RE: What age to serve at a bar? > RE: What age to serve at a bar?

There is now no prescribed minimum age as far as making the sale or supply of alcohol. However, each sale or supply must be specifically approved  by a responsible person if an offence is not to be committed. - David How many times have I been held up at the checkout when the seventeen-year-old has had to ask for clearance to put a bottle of wine through the scanner? I aim for the more mature cashier if I can help it. As for the outside bar, and aside from legal considerations, I can think of one specific example where I wouldn't dream of having anyone under the age of 21 serving the public: our Harvest Home. We put 1700 in a marquee and sell a good deal of alcohol to a largely youthful audience. Were we to put a sixteen year-old behind the bar, his mates are going to get trollied with dismal consequences for our license.

RE: Printable free speech and Pub Co's > RE: Printable free speech and Pub Co's

i would have thought a captain of industry like Mr Tuppen would have been a little more measured in his response - Chris Calling someone a moron (who patently isn't) says more about the accuser than the accusee, an incautious gambit from one in such a position as Mr Tuppen. Judge not lest thee be judged.

TUPPEN SLAMS FAIR PINT MPs > RE: TUPPEN SLAMS FAIR PINT MPs

Ted Tuppen doesn't have much time for those MPs who have signed up in support of Fair Pint... Talking to city analysts a few weeks back, Tuppen referred to them as "moronic". This is rather arrogant. Arrogance, of course, is the daddy of hubris. Let's see whither it leads.

RE: Supermarkets slash prices to rock bottom levels > RE: Supermarkets slash prices to rock bottom levels

Come the revolution when Gordon quits/is fired/is voted out,  the next government hopefully will see what is happening to this fine country and our great industry and do something positive for once. - Michael Governments are like lightbulbs. One burns out so we screw in another. They cast a similar light and so the shadows look familiar. Don't expect things to be much different; the same puppet masters will be running the show.

RE: Host demands PRS refund > RE: Host demands PRS refund

The PRS, which collects musicians' royalties, has given Bell 10 days to compile a list of acts and song lists planned for the whole of 2008... That's a very unreasonable request, particularly when you don't know who and what may be playing in the future. - David So the PRS clearly don't represent the interests of musicians. They should know that musicians are a capricious lot and prone to improvise when the mood takes. I play guitar myself and I wouldn't want these gauleiters meddling with any of my music.

RE: Coulson: OFT cops out of helping hosts escape the dreaded tie > RE: Coulson: OFT cops out of helping hosts escape the dreaded tie

So although the market is not technically foreclosed it is, in PRACTICE highly restricted and behaves as a monopoly. - Mark When you commit to crossing the Forth Road Bridge, there is no turning back. Then you are faced with a battery of toll booths. You are free to choose which you queue for, but they all charge a pound. I wonder if this would count as competition in the eyes of the OFT.
