RE: Welsh licensee hits out at 'heavy-handed smoke police' > RE: Welsh licensee hits out at 'heavy-handed smoke police'

Is there anyway these forums can operate without sinking into slagging each other off?  I have a definite stance on smoking...its mine, I have a right to it and I have the right not to be personally attacked, as has everyone else who deigns to take part (EVEN IF I DO NOT AGREE WITH THEIR VIEW!).  If this forum is actually for debate and not political point scoring I will continue to read.  If not, what is the flipping point?  Its getting to the point that the arguments are buried in personal snipes and attacks.

RE: Smoking ban - "exclude bingo and clubs" > RE: Smoking ban - "exclude bingo and clubs"

"ASH director Deborah Arnott said nicotine products could double smokers' chances of kicking the habit." There's their favourite word "could" again. Well if the above is true, the why were my local radio station advertising that giving up with the aid of NRT makes you 4 times more likely to succeed???? The inconsistency is alarming! There is no inconsistency....evidence shows you are twice as likely to quit smoking by using NRT.  You are four times more likely to quit smoking using NRT and the support of a Local NHS Stop Smoking Service.  Unfortunately what is published by newspapers is, as we know, not always correct....

RE: Group's challenge could delay smoke ban > RE: Group's challenge could delay smoke ban

smoking cessation that doesn't work?   How do you work that one out Robert.  Are you saying that my colleagues and I do not help people who want to give up smoking?  Are you honestly saying that we are part of a government plot?  Whilst I accept that you can have your own opinions, albeit that I do not concur, are you honestly saying that NHS Stop Smoking Services do nothing to support and help people who genuinely want to give up smoking?  Or are you trying to say that once a smoker always a smoker, such is the power of the addiction?  I am interested as I run an NHS Stop Smoking Service and I know that what we do does work in many many cases. Can I ask another question?  You may not want to respond and I accept that.  Are you a current, ex or never smoker?  Do you think this has flavoured your response to the forthcoming legislation?  Or is this purely to do with what you consider individual rights versus, as you so frequently put is, flawed science?

Smoking ban guidance worry for pubs > RE: Smoking ban guidance worry for pubs

There is no definition of distance from a building in the English law.  The guidance is simple, and clear.   Roof, fine.  Walls (even if they have doors or windows ignore them, they can be closed so they are for the purpose of the definition solid) 50% of the the area must be open.  i.e. square room, 2 of the walls must be open and not closable, i.e. no sliding doors.  However, put the structure up against another building then you must count this as a solid wall (because it is!).

RE: Jersey approves smoking ban > RE: Jersey approves smoking ban

Graham I agree that personal comments and diatribes are unnecessary and simply reinforce stereotypes.  I am not from the industry but I am a bonafide NHS employee who helps people give up smoking!  I personally cannot wait to go into a pub and not have to put up with smoky atmospheres and I know my clients also are looking forward to not being in an atmosphere that really does test their commitment to ditching the weed.  However, I agree that everyone can think whatever they want about the forthcoming ban.  Personally I cannot wait as I sing in pubs regularly and love pub ambience (not particularly atmospheres)!
