Conservatives to drop alcohol unit system > RE: Conservatives to drop alcohol unit system

Excellent news. I have been arguing this for some years. see http://bit.ly/6xCLti It could be argued that the Units were poorly thought out. But in fat they were simply made up off the cuff. After all 1 unit in the UK is 1 CL of alcohol. More emphasis must be placed on teaching basic maths. So why bother inventing Units when CLs are already clearly defined? And CL means the same in every country wheras Units vary from country to country so if somebody drinks on holiday s/he is going to be hopelessly confused, get drunk and have a great excuse for blaming the "wrong" Units. A standard 75 CL bottle of wine at 12% contains 9 CL of alcohol (oops sorry Gov, I meant Units). So: 75 x 12 / 100 (that's what per cent means folks) = 9 CL (oops again Gov - Units). If this is high tech maths, then that's just so sad and the UK has bigger problems than just the number of Units consumed And given that the Government Limits (no longer called guidelines I see) are as vague as 2 to 3 units for women and 3 to 4 units for men a day that's like saying the speed limit should be "20 to 30 MPH" for small cars and "30 to 40 MPH" for large cars. And given the broad numbers, a pint is pretty much half a litre. 50 CL x 4/100 = 2 CL (slap my wrists Gov - these are Units). So that's a couple of pints a day for blokes. And a third of a bottle of wine for women and a bit less than a half bottle a day for men. And by the way where is the research that defined these Daily Unit Limits? They may well be appropriate or simply plucked out of thin air. But in my experience when people say "2 or 3" or "3 or 4" they are usually making things up. We should introduce sensible meaningful properly researched and justified alcohol guidelines in CL of alcohol based on an individual's height, weight and perhaps sex.

Next time I am in a pub I will say "I have recently implemented a policy to extend payment terms to 95 days to Carlsberg UK and its suppliers. Send me an invoice in 3 months."

Litre of beer battle begins > RE: Litre of beer battle begins

Freedom of measures sounds very liberal but what if everybody chooses their own measures including US and Roman? Standardisation makes price comparison easy for customers. But if Mr Davison really wants to sell in measures of 0.5 litres then the law certainly allows it. Just a bit of creative thinking is required. Simply serve in Pints and charge for only 0.5 litre giving away 0.068 litres free. Warren Edwardes Wine for Spice http://wineforspice.com Just some creative thinking is required.
