Record profits for Wetherspoon > RE: Record profits for Wetherspoon
Interestingly I worked for Wetherspoon when the 9am opening was introduced and at the time it was a pain during the switch over. I had to open at 7am initially but this was adjusted to 8am once the team setled in and didn't cause any problems provided the previous nights closedown was done correctly. There were objections but mostly it was scaremongering and via other local licensees and the local paper letters page. I have just nipped in to one of my local Wetherspoons (multiple options in Cardiff) and asked whether they would be serving alcohol from 7am. The response was initially 'How do you know about this?' then 'I can't see it' to 'We've tried but it doesn't look likely'. A 7am beer is great for night shift workers (think finishing work on 9-5 and having a pint afterwards), will not impact most pubs as they won't be open until 11-12am and these opening times will not attract late night clubbers as there would be a 3 hour gap minimum between close and open. Additionally there may be extra employment opportunities as the staffing rota will not cover employees (as can happen now) where you do a close then an open. No doubt it will come to fruition unless Wetherspoon as a company states it has no intention of ever serving alcohol during its complete opening times. More chance of plaiting fog. However I have to admit that whatever time that the pub opens there will always be someone queuing outside to get in. This is a reflection of our soceity not a judgement on the runnning of licenced premises. |

Carlsberg launches glassware promotion > RE: Carlsberg launches glassware promotion
Yes customers will buy products in branded glasses, provided the branding is integral to the glass, not a transfer/paint job. It's so they can nick them. Every student house in the land has them. Coke glasses etc. So yes, you would see an increase in sales but not a switch to make the branded glass product the preferred choice. Once you've got the set number you require it back to your regular drink probably based on price. |

ID scan system could be rolled out in Durham > RE: ID scan system could be rolled out in Durham
Just checked the calendar and it's not April 1st... Inspector F**kWit is living on a different planet. I have a shiny new National Identity Card and I'm not a Foreign National, in the North West, or 18-24 in London but I've got one and nobody accepts it as ID (including my Bank), but it is a valid European Passport. If I had to show it to get served in licenced premises I'd recommend the staff went to Specsavers. I would not under any circumstances let anyone other than the Police or Passport Control scan it, due to the information held on it. If it was a legal requirement to show id to enter licenced premises (more chance of plaiting fog) they could look at it, but most people have never seen an ID card so that's no use. If any licenced premises insisted on scanning it they would lose me as a customer permanently and I would publicise it to the wider world. Then I would go to the nearest pub/restaurant without a scanner, which no doubt would be advertising the fact. 'Welcome No Scans Here!' alongside 'Watch Sky Sports/EPSN Here'. It would need every licensed premise in Durhamt to have a scanner and then we can all sit back and watch them go out of business whilst reading the Mr Angry letters in the papers. |

The real age drinking starts > The real age drinking starts
For me it was 1972 when I was 14 and taken to my local and introduced to the then landlord by both my uncles. I was told that I could only come in on my own when I was 16. Having served my 'apprenticeship' it became my local for years.
Now I can only take my children to some pubs e.g. JD Wetherspoons, if we all have a main meal. Ironically the pub I first went to at 14 has been bought by Wetherspoons, the Childwall Fiveways.
PS With regard to the Health Police, Government Imperial policy, Political Correctness, why can't anyone say "any tom, |

Trade fears Tory plans will hit pubs > RE: Trade fears Tory plans will hit pubs
It may seem a simple question and no doubt many will add on distribution, extra staffing, paperwork, regulatory requirements etc. BUT what is the cost of a pint? If it helps I'll rephrase the question, what is the true cost of a unit of alchohol. At what point are supermarkets, if indeed they are, selling at a loss?. Just because one individual cannot buy a product at a particular price should not mean that no-one is allowed to buy the product at that price or lower. It's called a market, and some are better at it than others, actually they could be called Super... |

Pubs aim to highlight 'irresponsible' deals > RE: Pubs aim to highlight 'irresponsible' deals
Interesting viewpoint Mr Kheng but I'm sorry it just doesn't wash. Irresponsible supermarkets allowing people to drink unsupervised. What do you suggest? A drinking at home ban? 40p a unit set as the price everywhere? Where is everywhere? Set by who? Oldham Borough Council admitted that setting a minimum price for alcohol is illegal. Pre-loading a problem is it? It's called customers voting with the feet and their wallets, why spend £40 on a night out when it can be done for a lot less. And the audacity of the man to recommend that supermarkets are irresponsible but it might be useful to those free of tie to check the website for any half decent offers. Irresponsible might just be a pub having a free car park. I'm sure some local councillor will take that issue up. Take your complaints to the pub companies. Oh and I'll think you'll find that the minimum age for alcohol consumption in the UK is 5 years (subject to medical considerations) |

Presumably the 125ml wine glass is solely to allow a headline wine price? |

26-year-old irate over Wetherspoon ID checks > 26-year-old irate over Wetherspoon ID checks
As a customer of Wetherspoons, an ex employee of Wetherspoons, and still a bar man elsewhere, I can understand the frustration felt by groups where one or more members of the group are age checked and subsequently refused service. The all too frequent problem that arises is that if the group stays then other members of the group purchase alcohol for the one(s)refused. To say that they were not ID checked elsewhere just highlights the failings of the bar staff at the previous premises they visited. Given the repercussions for the staff and licensee, I can't blame them for playing it safe. If having refused to serve someone and the customer is subsequently identified as consuming alcohol under age, the purchaser was fined at the level reserved for staff, we might see a sea change in attitudes. |
