RE: Cheap Sky loophole

so if you have a beer garden, or a bench outside the front of your pub, screw a chess board to it and place an ad in the local paper that its free for anyone who wants to use it and job done, you are now also a public service and entitled to cheaper rates

RE: Cheap Sky loophole

Sky quoted me £1800 per month for my "Public House" to receive their channels in the bar only....... I might add that im registered with the rates office as a "Public House & Premises". I am actually a three star hotel which is registered with the tourist board, local authority and fire service. I was told by the Sky rep that if I changed the classification with the rates office to "Hotel" then he could offer me ALL the Sky channels in 8 bedrooms and the lounge bar for only £168.00p ........ Ive been in touch with the rates office and hold my breath.... Guess my rateable value will go up !!!!

RE: Cheap Sky loophole

There is actually a company that gets your rates classification changed that is doing this.  Check out www.call-us.tv they are called Satvision UK Ltd.

This has been about for some time, but at least it gives people an option to get one up on Sky.

Please note that pub co leaseholders may be able to contact their landlords retained rating agents to do the same service being offered for £500, for free.  Rating Agents services are usually included within your service charge, and they should be looking to advise you whether you will benefit or not.  Sometimes your Rateable Value (RV) might be lower than it should be and you could draw the authorities attention to this point and face a revaluation that wipes out any positive Sky gains....

Take professional advice from an accredited surveyor regarding rating advice - paying up front to a Satalite Company rings alarm bells to me.....Gerald Eve are a good company that specialise in rating.

RE: Cheap Sky loophole

I was made aware of this company through contacts in the trade.  I am not sure if they appeal against the rateable value, when changing the classification or not.  I understand they use RICS Surveyors.

Another think to bear in mind, is that rating companies do not appeal for free.  The brewery may be absorbing this price, but somewhere in the fine print you are paying for it.

I still reckon foreign satellite is the best foot forward if you dont want to get ripped off by SKY.

Craig-hawker,

I'm interested to talk to you as we have alot in common regarding receiving foreign channels. I have an EU system myself and I enjoy watching quality programming. I'd like to share similar interests with you either via email or via MSN if you like?

I support your comments on the use of foreign satellite systems is not illegal.

RE: Cheap Sky loophole

I don't know who that was meant for, however I do believe that these forums are the best route for people to voice their opinions.  If someone thinks that I am wrong, and I have conceeded upon points before, then I think it is correct for members to tell me so.  This is a way to develop a balanced view on a subject, and for people to contribute their ideas which I feel benefits members more effectively.

I have followed the foreign satellite debate for some time.  I supply to the trade, and am an agent for a variety of different products ranging from cleaning products to satellite systems, however this is an issue that really seems to have been a major problem for Licensees, and I have become quite seasoned on the issue.

You will notice that I never feel it appropriate to plug satellite companies on this forum, as I understand that this site should not be used in this way.  However through contacts in the business, the issue surrounding loopholes in getting Sky subscriptions as low as possible is an alternative route for those considering foreign satellite, who may not feel they want to take the risk.  The link to the earlier post, was a recognition that this loophole exists, and provides readers with a balanced route, should they wish to take it.  I would not have brought it to the forums attention, if I felt it was not a reputable company.

However my e-mail address is james_stevenson100@hotmail.com should you wish to contact me regarding the foreign satellite debate.  I would say though that it is much more interesting to share views collectively.

RE: Cheap Sky loophole

James you are quite right it should be the nature of this forum that posters do share experiences and advice, whether highlighting good or bad. I am sure the current group of posters were not implying anything. has others been here one may not have been able to say that. We can only offer personal experience whether of suppliers, 'experts', Pubco's, SKY whatever. It for other individuals to extract from the posts what they feel to be appropriate to them. We need civilised information and debate. The trade is at a cross roads and sadly which direction we take on so many issues will determine how many of us are actually left this time next year.
