Brewer numbers reach post-war high

More UK breweries operate now than at any time since the Second World War, according to the Good Beer Guide 2010.

The new edition of the guide, released today, lists 1,297 new pub entries and 71 new breweries in the UK — despite record pub closures and falling beer sales.

This is the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA’s) 37th edition of the book, and this year more than 4,500 of the best real-ale pubs are listed, along with details of ales, food, opening hours, beer gardens and family facilities.

The 71 new breweries bring the nationwide total to 711, with more brewers in operation now than at any time since 1945.

Guide editor Roger Protz said: “It is wonderful to see there are now over 700 breweries in Britain brewing far in excess of 2,500 different varieties of real ale, and so many fantastic pubs in which to drink this beer.”

For the second year, Good Beer Guide fans can download software to their Sat-Navs or access this year’s guide through their mobile phones.

The guide costs £11 for members (£10 if bought online) and £15.99 for non-members.
