Taking healthy option may make you drunk more quickly

According to reports this morning, scientists have found that mixing alcoholic drinks with diet soft drinks can get you drunk quicker.

Tests on sugar-free colas, tonics and lemonades revealed they can boost blood-alcohol levels by up to 66 per cent.

Dr Chris Rayner, who led the research, told the Sun: “More and more people are choosing diet drinks as a healthier alternative.

“What people do not understand is the potential side-effects that diet-mixed alcoholic drinks may have on their body’s response to alcohol.”

His research found the lack of sugar meant the body could digest the fluid quicker – meaning the alcohol gets into the blood stream quicker.

A spokesman for the Council on Alcohol said: “This will form part of our advice if the study is accurate — it is a significant finding. It’s a message we have to give to female clients as a lot of them go for diet mixers.”
