Smoke ban to start July 1, 2007

The Government has announced that the smoking ban in England will come into effect on July 1, 2007, the Morning Advertiser has learnt.

The pub trade now has seven months to prepare - although the task will not be made easier by the lack of guidance on regulations.

Rob Hayward, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: "This is a welcome announcement and a critical milestone in the progress towards implementing the smoking ban.

“We now have greater clarity around precisely how and when it will come into force.

“The decision on the date provides the necessary clear timeline. Business, particularly the whole of the hospitality sector, can now prepare for the vital task of communicating with the public about the changes they can expect to experience.

“We look forward to continuing to work constructively with Government and other agencies to ensure the glide path to implementation is a smooth and surprise free as possible."
