ASBO beer mats to prevent disorder

Five men who have been given ASBOs preventing them from entering pubs in Stockton will find it hard to breach the order after 25,000 beer mats were printed with their mugshots on them.

The beermats are to be distributed in hundreds of pubs and clubs and feature five men who have been issued Anti-Social Behaviour Orders for violence and intimidation in pubs and clubs in Stockton borough.

This scheme is thought to be the first of its kind.

Sarah Graham, community safety officer for the local council, told the Evening Gazette: "We decided to go down the beermat route as people will be more likely to take notice of something that is right in front of them. It also takes some of the stress off the staff."

Sgt Keith Daley, from Stockton police licensing unit, told the paper: "This is another medium to get the message out to members of the public that if they see these people in the premises they should notify the police so that action can be taken.

"These people have been barred from these premises for a good reason. We have only taken out Asbos as a last resort."
