Scottish smoking ban hits turnover

More than half of licensees in Scotland say turnover has fallen as a result of the smoking ban that began 18 months ago.

That is according to a new survey of 267 licensees of pubs, hotels and other licensed venues by MA's sister title On-Trade Scotland.

In total, 56% of respondents said turnover was down

as a result of the stub-out of

1 March 2006.

More than one in five (22%) said turnover had fallen by between 5% and 10%. Almost as many (19%) put the figure at 10% to 15%. And 15% of people said turnover had dipped by 15% or more.

The survey also pointed to concerns about rising energy costs - 43% listed it as a factor that caused them to make substantial changes or cut backs. Increases in Sky subscriptions (30%) and the minimum wage (27%) were also listed as factors.

Elsewhere, 56% said brewers and spirit companies do not give them enough sales support, while 27% said drinks firms "could do more".
