Pubs to sell lottery tickets
Brewer and retailer JW Lees has taken advantage of changes in the Gambling Act to become the first to install lottery ticket machines in its pubs.
Twenty two pubs in the Manchester firm's managed estate are being fitted with Lottery King machines that dispense pull-tab tickets, which cost £1 each. Prize money ranges from £2 to £100 and the average payout is said to be 50%.
In addition, 20% of the proceeds go to good causes such as the British Legion's Poppy appeal and the Kids in Need Foundation. The remaining 30% is split between Lees and Lottery King.
Cate Gale and Steve Nutter, managers of the Lancashire Fold - the first Lees' pub to trial the machine - said it was proving very popular.
Nutter added: "It offers something new to our customers and is a bit of fun while they're enjoying their usual drink."
