Licensee fined for flouting smoking ban

A Kent licensee has been fined for smoking in his pub and for failing to display the correct signage.

Mark Hughes of the Blacksmiths Arms in Sheerness was caught smoking in his pub by council officials and ordered to pay a £30 fine.

He was also fined £150 for not displaying the correct signage on the front and back doors of the pub despite having signage elsewhere.

“I just can’t believe this is happening. The whole situation is bizarre. I keep thinking I’m in a bad dream and if I pinch myself, I’ll wake up and everything will be all right," he told the Kent Messenger.

“Pubs all over are struggling because of the anti-smoking legislation at the moment despite what the Government and some sectors of the media might be saying.”
