MPs: Increase tax on super strength lagers

More than 50 MPs are campaigning for an increase in duty on high strength lager.

Labour MP Martin Linton has tabled an EDM – a petition for MPs – calling for the Government to tax super strength lagers – over 9% abv – at a higher rate.

The motion was tabled in December but has taken on extra significance following the announcement of a voluntary agreement by supermarkets in Westminster to remove high strength brands of lager and cider form their shelves.

The petition said that super strength lagers "encourage excess consumption since each 500ml can contains 4.5 units of alcohol which is more than the Government's recommended daily alcohol limit".

It said that by increasing tax on these drinks the Government would be "saving the lives and improving the health of many homeless people with alcohol addiction problems".
