CCTV in pub toilet cubicles

In a bold move to combat the threat of drug taking and dealing, the cameras operate in the ladies toilets at the Rose & Crown in Lawrence Street.

Sarah Coates, manager of the Punch Taverns pub, said men were suspected of selling drugs in the ladies toilets. It was feared the cubicles were used to prepare lines of cocaine.

She said cameras are positioned so they don't film customers, but only surfaces above and behind the toilet.

They are activated when they detect motion in those areas. The footage can be seen in the living area upstairs.

Signs telling customers that the cameras operate are displayed in the pub.

Coates said police and council licensing officers support the use of cameras.

Positive reaction

"The reaction of most customers has been really positive," said Coates. "We've had the odd occasion when somebody has questioned us about it. We've been more than willing to show them what we can and can't see, to keep their mind at ease."

The cameras aren't fitted in the men's toilets because the entrance is nearer to the pub bar, so it could be monitored more closely.

MA legal editor Peter Coulson said: "Consultation with police and local authorities is essential before embarking on anything like this.

"There are data protection and human rights issues on the question of privacy and it's something that licensees will have to embark on with extreme care."
