Pub is place to celebrate Britishness
Going down the pub for a few pints is one of the ideas put forward for a new bank holiday to celebrate Britishness.
British Bank Holiday would help boost pubs
Immigration minister Liam Byrne has put forward 27 ideas in a new pamphlet, A more united Britain, following Gordon Brown's proposal for a new bank holiday to unite the communities of Britain. The likely date for a British bank holiday would be the second bank holiday in May.
Ideas on how to celebrate being British include celebrating through drinking as well as a Live Aid style concert, street parties, morris dancing and sports events.
The idea has, however, prompted criticism from opposition parties accusing Brown of trying to promote Britishness only because he is a Scot leading the country.
But a move to promote a British bank holiday would surely be welcomed by a beleaguered pub trade.
