Council asks for research on street smoking ban

A Leicestershire councillor has commissioned research in to a ban on street smoking outside pubs.

Council has asked for research on a street smoking ban

North West Leicestershire District councillor Nick Rushton told the Morning Advertiser that he had received a number of complaints about littering and from people having to walk through crowds of people smoking outside pubs at weekends.

"I must stress there is no policy in place. I don't want this getting blown out of all proportion. I have asked for some research to be done. If I am in favour of action being taken there would first have to be a wide-spread consultation."

Rushton said the matter had arisen at a council cabinet meeting when discussing litter problems. "To be fair there are a lot worse offenders in terms of littering like mobile kebab vans. People tend to buy a kebab, realise its poisonous and drop it on the street."
